Grassley Named 'Champion of Main Street'

National Retail Federation recognizes Grassley as top advocate for retail industry

BUTLER COUNTY, IOWA - U.S. Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) received the National Retail Federation's "Champion of Main Street" award for his bipartisan efforts to defend the American retail industry from organized crime.

"I'm honored to be recognized for my time spent fighting for Main Street," Grassley said. "Organized retail crime is a billion-dollar problem that's impacted major retailers and small businesses in Iowa and across the nation. I'll continue working to ensure federal and local law enforcement have the resources they need to safeguard American businesses and bring bad actors to justice."

"Retailers are the fabric of American communities," said David French, NRF Executive Vice President of Government Relations. "NRF is proud to recognize Senator Grassley as a 'Champion of Main Street' for his leadership on Capitol Hill to champion legislation that will help the retail industry succeed."

Background

Amid a nationwide spike in shoplifting and flash mob robberies, Grassley and Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev) introduced bipartisan legislation to stem the flow of organized retail crime. Their Combating Organized Retail Crime Act would create a multi-agency task force and provide local law enforcement with new tools to tackle evolving trends in retail theft. Grassley last year hosted a press conference in Washington with the NRF and bipartisan, bicameral cosponsors to rally support for the bill. He also convened local, state and federal officials for a roundtable in Cedar Rapids to discuss the shadowy ties between organized retail crime and the illicit drug trade.
