SGMC Health Welcomes Neurohospitalist

SGMC Health is thrilled to welcome Alireza Showraki, MD, a highly skilled neurologist to the health system. Neurologists are medical professionals who diagnose and treat diseases and conditions of your brain, spinal cord, and nerves. Dr. Showraki also specializes in movement disorders and Parkinson's disease.

As a neurohospitalist, Dr. Showraki will see patients in the hospital at SGMC Health Main. His comprehensive expertise encompasses a wide range of neurological conditions, including familial tremors, stroke, epilepsy, headache, dementia, and more. His proficiency extends to performing Botox injections for dystonia, migraine, spasticity, and drooling/sialorrhea, as well as specialized deep brain stimulation (DBS) programming. Additionally, he is adept in lumbar punctures, occipital nerve blocks, EEG interpretation, and EMG and nerve conduction studies.

He shares that his fascination with the complexity of the brain led him to pursue a career in neurology. His deep commitment to understanding and treating neurological disorders is matched by his genuine compassion for his patients. Dr. Showraki shares that patients can expect a thorough and detailed exploration of their condition. "I believe in connecting with my patients on a personal level and fostering a supportive and trusting environment. I want my patients to feel fully informed and comfortable with their treatment plan."

Dr. Showraki received his medical degree from Shiraz University School of Medicine in Iran. He completed his residency in Neurology at Southern Illinois University and his fellowship in Movement Disorders at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in California.

According to Dr. Showraki, being able to see his patients regain significant independence through brain stimulation placement and programming fuels his dedication to the field of neurology.

Dr. Showraki chose to join SGMC Health because of its potential to become a major hub for medical science. "I see great opportunity for growth and am excited to contribute to the system's development and success," he said.

According to SGMC Health Chief Medical Officer Pankaj Agrawal, "Dr. Showraki's expertise is impressive, scoring in the top 1 percent of all national Resident In Training Exams (RITE) and the top 5 percent in the American Academy of Neurology Board Certification exams. His passion for neurology, dedication to patient care, and enthusiasm for joining the Valdosta community make him a great addition to the SGMC Health team."
