Ohio Wesleyan University Announces September 2024 Calendar of Public Events

DELAWARE, Ohio - Ohio Wesleyan University today announced its September 2024 lineup of public events. Unless otherwise noted, admission is free.

Aug. 13-Sept. 27: The Ohio Art League's "2024 Fall Juried Exhibition," at Ohio Wesleyan's Richard M. Ross Art Museum, 60 S. Sandusky St., Delaware. The juried show features 108 pieces from 90 accomplished artists from across the state. As part of the exhibition, the museum will hold a talk by exhibition juror Philip Sugden at 1 p.m. Sept. 1. With nearly 400 members, the Columbus-based Ohio Art League (OAL) seeks to empower artists by fostering a vibrant artistic community and providing diverse opportunities to showcase their work, connect with fellow creatives, and expand their knowledge and skills. 8 p.m. Sept. 6, 13, 20, and 27: Friday night skywatches, at Perkins Observatory, 3199 Columbus Pike (U.S. 23), Delaware. Content varies based on weather conditions, but may include a planetarium show, observatory tours, and stargazing with the 32-inch Schottland Telescope. 6 p.m. Sept. 7, with a free 5 p.m. tailgate: Bishop Backers Fall Community Day with free admission to the Ohio Wesleyan vs. Otterbein football game, at Selby Stadium, 45 S. Henry St., Delaware. The evening will begin with a free tailgate at 5 p.m. featuring City of Delaware police officers and firefighters and Ohio Wesleyan Public Safety officers grilling hamburgers, hotdogs, and meat-free options outside the stadium. The Bishops-vs.-Cardinals game kicks off at 6 p.m. Admission is free, but donations will be accepted and a 50/50 raffle held to support the Stratford Ecological Center, 3038 Liberty Road, Delaware, a 236-acre educational farm and nature preserve. 7:30 p.m. Sept. 21: "Scenes!" featuring performances staged by the Theatre Directing Class on the Main Stage of Chappelear Drama Center, 45 Rowland Ave., Delaware. This 30-minute event features new students as actors and may contain adult themes and language. "Scenes!" is presented by the OWU chapter of the Theta Alpha Phi National Theatre Honors Fraternity. 8 a.m. to noon Sept. 26: U.S. Entrepreneurship Competition, featuring finalists presenting to a panel of judges during Ohio Wesleyan's first national business plan competition, in the Benes Rooms of Hamilton-Williams Campus Center, 40 Rowland Ave., Delaware. Finalists will compete in two tracks: college student and professional. Winners will share in a prize pool worth nearly $500,000. The top three competitors in each track will be announced Sept. 26, with the first-, second-, and third-place designations revealed Oct. 5 during OWU's Homecoming and Family Weekend. Sept. 26 - Fall 2024 OWU ConnectionConference

This daylong event celebrates Ohio Wesleyan's signature experience, the OWU Connection, which helps students to Think Big (complete undergraduate research), Do Good (participate in community-engaged learning, including student leadership), Go Global (complete off-campus study), or Get Real (explore their future careers through meaningful internships and externships). Admission is free. As events are finalized, they will be added to the conferencewebpage at owu.edu/ConnectionConference.

• 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. - Student presentations, panels, and peer-to-peer discussions, in locations throughout the Ohio Wesleyan campus. This fall's conference will include students practicing their skills in civil discourse after completing new virtual Perspectives training provided by the Constructive Dialogue Institute. The training will help everyone to have productive, respectful conversations regarding difficult and potentially divisive topics.
• Noon to 2 p.m. - Black Wall Street, in the atrium of Hamilton-Williams Campus Center, 40 Rowland Ave., Delaware. Guests are invited to learn, network, and shop from local BIPOC-owned businesses and OWU BIPOC student-entrepreneurs promoting their ventures. Black Wall Street is inspired by the legacy of Tulsa, Oklahoma's Greenwood District, known as Black Wall Street. Free food will be provided by Donna's Delicious Donuts and Taesty's Southern Style. This OWU event is in partnership with The Woltemade Center for Economics, Business, and Entrepreneurship; Office of Multicultural Student Affairs, Delaware Entrepreneurial Center at OWU; and OWU Connection.
• 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. - Patricia Belt Conrades Summer Science Research Symposium, in the atrium of the Schimmel/Conrades Science Center, 90 S. Henry St., Delaware. The annual symposium features poster presentations from Ohio Wesleyan students who participated in OWU's 10-week Summer Science Research Program or who conducted summer research at other institutions around the country. The student-scientists will explain their original research and answer questions.
• 3 p.m. - Impact entrepreneur Marius Smit, founder of Plastic Whale, shares his journey of turning plastic waste into powerful change, in the Benes Rooms of Hamilton-Williams Campus Center, 40 Rowland Ave., Delaware. Thirteen years ago, Smit set out to build a boat from plastic waste without any prior experience, and today, his vision has inspired thousands, leading to a fleet of 16 boats made from Amsterdam Canal Plastic, hundreds of corporate customers, and several successful ventures including skateboards and office furniture made from recycled materials. Smit's presentation is the 2024 Latham Bishop Ventures Lecture and is organized by the Woltemade Center for Economics, Business, and Entrepreneurship. Admission is free. 7 p.m. Sept. 30: Jonathan W. White, Ph.D., professor of American Studies at Christopher Newport University, presents "A Tale of Two Slave Traders: Lincoln and the Destruction of the Transatlantic Slave Trade." White will speak in Benes Rooms A and B of OWU's Hamilton-Williams Campus Center, 40 Rowland Ave., Delaware. White is the author or editor of 17 books and more than 100 articles, essays, and reviews about the Civil War, slavery and emancipation, African American history, Abraham Lincoln, and the U.S. Constitution.
