City of Grand Junction Launches 4th and 5th Street Pilot Project

The City of Grand Junction launched a pilot project designed to reduce speeds on 4th and 5th Streets which will increase safety for motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians. The blocks between North Ave. and Ute Ave. on 4th and 5th Streets will undergo a transformation into a one-lane, one-direction street.

The first phase of this project included minor concrete curb work, chipseal, and restriping prior to the launch of the pilot. During the pilot, vehicle traffic will be narrowed to one way, one lane on each street (4th and 5th). A bike lane protected by parallel parking will be constructed on the right-hand side and diagonal parking will remain on the left-hand side of the roadway.

The pilot enables the community to "test drive" the new design for 4th and 5th Streets. City crews are able to respond quickly to community input with revisions as already evidenced by changes to 4th Street based on the feedback received. The objective of the project with the reconfiguration is increased safety for all users through the heart of downtown.

The project began with goals of studying the need for the one-way streets included in the Downtown Development Authority's original Plan of Development in 1981 and reconfirmed in its 2019 Vibrant Together Master Plan. Learn more about the 2021-2022 study.
