Gov. Bill Lee Announces September as National Preparedness Month

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Gov. Bill Lee and the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency (TEMA) are recognizing September 2024 as National Preparedness Month with a special emphasis on enhancing emergency preparedness for the deaf, hard of hearing, blind, and low vision communities. This initiative underscores Tennessee's commitment to ensuring that all Tennesseans have the tools and resources necessary to stay safe and informed during emergencies and disasters.

"We are committed to ensuring that every Tennessean has the information and resources they need to be prepared for emergencies," said Gov. Bill Lee. "Our 2024 focus on the deaf, hard of hearing, blind, and low vision communities during National Preparedness Month is a crucial step in building a safer, more inclusive state."

National Preparedness Month, a component of the Ready Campaign spearheaded by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), serves as a reminder that a disaster can strike at any time. Throughout September, TEMA will promote emergency preparedness topics including how to make a plan, build an emergency go-kit, and stay informed about risks in your area.

The keys to effective disaster preparedness apply to all of us, but people with access and functional needs or disabilities may need to approach preparedness planning with additional considerations.

"TEMA is dedicated to bridging the gap in emergency preparedness for individuals with disabilities," said TEMA Director Patrick C. Sheehan. "By improving our communication methods and providing tailored resources, we aim to empower all Tennesseans to be ready for any situation."

Emergency Go-Kit Distribution: In partnership with the Tennessee Department of Human Services (TDHS), 300 Emergency Go-Kits will be distributed to better prepare Tennesseans who are deaf, hard of hearing, blind, and have low vision. The go-kit will include a Midland Weather Radio, Midland Strobe Light & Pillow Shaker Bundle Attachment, and family First Aid Kit. Distribution will begin on September 17 at 10 TDHS Vocational Rehabilitation locations.

2024 Emergency Preparedness Expo: TEMA is supporting the Upper Cumberland Emergency Preparedness Expo, presented by the Tennessee Department of Health (TDH), on Saturday, September 14. First responders, government agencies, and local businesses will share valuable resources and tools during the free, family-friendly event.
