Two Alarm Fire at 1226 Chartres Street

On Thursday, January 25, 2024, at 5:45 a.m. the New Orleans Fire Department (NOFD) responded to a 911 call to an apartment building at 1226 Chartres Street. The first company arrived on the scene at 5:50 a.m., reporting heavy smoke from a rear unit of the building which had ten apartments. The incident commander struck a second alarm at 6:53 a.m. for extra manpower to assist in extinguishing small smoldering fires throughout the structure. The building was under renovation and had recently been secured, but firefighters saw signs of forced entry when they arrived on the scene. Multiple neighbors stated that the squatters frequented the property and that they'd return within hours of being run off. On January 1, 2024, the NOFD responded to a one-alarm fire at the property next door which is also under renovation as the other building with the exception of one of the apartments being rented out.

Sixteen NOFD units carrying forty Fire Operations personnel were deployed to bring this fire under control at 7:56 a.m. There were no reports of any civilian or firefighter injuries.
