CSUB’s Latinx Heritage Month celebration begins this week

Latinx cultural and historical contributions to the nation and campus community are being celebrated by California State University, Bakersfield as part of Latinx Heritage Month in September and October.

Festivities began with a kick-off event on Monday at the Student Union patio that included live music and free food. Events will be held through Oct. 15 in conjunction with National Hispanic Heritage Month.

More than 60% of undergraduates at CSUB identify as Hispanic. CSUB was federally designated as a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) in 1998. A university receives an HSI designation if Hispanic students make up at least 25% of full-time equivalent undergraduates.

Here is a list of some of the major events being held as part of Latinx Heritage Month this year:

Sept. 18: Get to Know Your Rights, 1 p.m. in the Student Union Multipurpose Room. Students can learn about immigrant rights, options under immigration law and obtain legal help.

Sept. 19: Noche Bajo Las Estrellas (Night Under the Stars), 7 p.m. in the Stockdale Courtyard. The event will feature art, poetry, dancing and singing.

Sept. 23: Loteria Night, 5 p.m. in the Student Union Multipurpose Room.

Sept. 25: Sabor Latinx, 12 p.m. at the Student Union patio. Local food vendors

Sept. 26: Brown Bag Discussion with Dr. Jose Villagran, 12 p.m. in the Stockdale Room.

Sept. 27: Latinx celebration event, 11 a.m. at the Edible Garden. Enjoy tostilocos, agua frescas, loteria and more.

Oct. 9: Viva Los `Runners night during the men's soccer game against University of California, Santa Barbara, 7 p.m. on the main soccer field.

Oct. 10: Kegley Institute of Ethics Campus Conversation: "'Servingness' and HSIs: CSUB's Past Successes and Directions for Future Growth," 12 p.m. in the Student Union Multipurpose Room and via Zoom.

Oct. 15: "Latina/o/x Higher Education in Bakersfield" with Dr. Nora Cisneros, 11:30 a.m. in the Stockdale Room.
