GOP Candidates for Governor Back Abortion Bans Similar to Georgia Law That Led to Women Dying

New reporting from ProPublica outlines the devastating real-life consequences of Georgia's extreme abortion ban including how "[a]t least two women in Georgia died after they couldn't access legal abortions and timely medical care in their state," which bans abortion at six weeks - before most women know they're pregnant.

The threat to women's health doesn't end there, though, as Republican candidates for governor across the country have backed similar dangerous abortion bans, among other attempts to restrict reproductive freedom.

"In Georgia and across the country, we've seen women face the deadly consequences of extreme GOP abortion bans, yet Republican candidates for governor are still pushing for dangerous and unpopular restrictions on reproductive care," said DGA National Press Secretary Devon Cruz. "Again and again, including in deep-red states, voters have been clear that they do not support Republicans' attacks on their most fundamental rights, and they will reject them again this November."

Here's Where GOP Candidates for Governor Stand on Extreme Abortion Bans:

  • North Carolina: Since launching his campaign, Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson has been clear that he wants to completely ban abortion "for any reason" including for victims of rape and incest. Recently, Robinson reaffirmed his support for this extreme stance when he was caught on new audio telling a supporter that he wants to sign an abortion ban that will "get down to zero" weeks.
  • New Hampshire: Former U.S. Senator Kelly Ayotte spent her time in Washington leading the charge for a national abortion ban and voting to restrict women's access to reproductive care. After losing her seat, Ayotte served as a "sherpa" for Neil Gorsuch, helping get him confirmed to the Supreme Court, where he voted to overturn Roe v. Wade, which allowed states including Georgia to pass extreme abortion bans that put women in danger.
  • Washington: Former Congressman Dave Reichert earned a reputation as an "anti-abortion stalwart," voting for multiple abortion bans, and repeatedly voting against exceptions for the health of women.
  • Missouri: Lt. Gov. Mike Kehoe is a staunch supporter of Missouri's extreme abortion ban that does not include any exceptions for victims of rape and incest, and has even gone as far as promising to do "everything [he] can" to stop the ballot amendment that would enshrine abortion rights into the state constitution.
  • Indiana: Sen. Mike Braun supports Indiana's extreme abortion ban - the first to take effect after Roe v. Wade was overturned - saying the state "got it right," and pledging to go further if elected governor, including enacting criminal penalties for pharmacists dispensing abortion medication.
