Slurry Seal Starts Week of Sept. 9

Weather permitting, the City of Pierre's newest tactic for preserving its streets will start Sept. 11.

Between then and late September, ASCO, a specialty contractor, will place an oil-based seal mixed with small rocks on about 50 blocks of city streets. The slurry seal improves traction control for motorists while preventing moisture from penetrating the street surface.

"Moisture is consistently the biggest menace to street conditions," said Nick Waters, City Engineer. "This product is new to us but is being used throughout the Midwest; we're hopeful it will be a good preservation method for us too."

During the rolling operation, motorists should anticipate street closures lasting up to six hours. Businesses and those living on impacted streets will be contacted directly by the contractor. Until the closures are lifted, motorists should avoid both driving and parking on the impacted streets.

"Similar preservation tactics require multiple steps," said Waters. "This is a one-step process that minimizes traffic disruptions. If all goes well, we hope to incorporate slurry seal into our annual street program."

The city maintains more than 80 miles of streets. During this construction season, the city is repairing, rebuilding, or otherwise improving about 180 blocks of streets.
