A conference "Academic Freedom in Action," taking place in Strasbourg from 13-14 November, will highlight the democratic mission of higher education and the importance of safeguarding academic freedom, ensuring that higher education remains a cornerstone of democracy and critical thinking.
The conference, entitled Academic Freedom in Action, will address pressing concerns that academic freedom is facing increased pressures in recent years. A strong culture of democracy is crucial for its protection, and this event marks the launch of the Council of Europe's "Academic Freedom in Action" project, which aims to protect and promote academic freedom as an essential value in higher education.
Academic freedom is a cornerstone of democratic societies. Higher education institutions play a vital role in developing critical thinking, promoting social responsibility, and nurturing active citizenship. However, reports and experiences from the Council of Europe member states reveal that academic freedom has been under substantial strain over the past decade.
The Council of Europe has long championed the democratic mission of higher education, as reflected in its Education Strategy 2024-2030, "Learners First." This strategy highlights the need for universities to continue strengthening their role in democratic society, preparing future generations to engage actively in democratic processes and address contemporary global challenges.
