New, World-Class Facility Offers UK's First Domestically Recovered, Contact-Sensitive, Recycled Plastic at Scale

July 17, 2024

Packaging made with Berry's proprietary CleanStream® recycled material has ~35% lower carbon emissions than virgin plastic

Using the company's proprietary, closed-loop CleanStream technology, Berry Global Group, Inc.'s new, world-class recycling facility in Leamington Spa offers the United Kingdom's first domestically recovered, mechanically recycled, contact-sensitive, recycled plastic at scale. With the capacity to recycle nearly 40%* of all polypropylene (PP) waste collected from domestic recycling bins in the UK, this revolutionary facility can transform used plastic packaging into lower-carbon, certified recycled plastic for sustainable packaging at scale. PP is a type of plastic commonly found in trash bins, food packaging, and films.

"We are committed to investing in leading recycling technologies and materials to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and advance a circular, net-zero future," said Jean-Marc Galvez, President of Berry Global's Consumer Packaging International Division. "In addition to providing lower-carbon recycling for a broad range of applications, our revolutionary CleanStream technology helps close the loop for contact-sensitive packaging - enabling our customers to advance their sustainability goals with faster speed to market."

Berry's innovative CleanStream technology washes, sorts, and decontaminates the waste to produce lower-carbon, recycled plastic, helping close the loop for contact-sensitive packaging. According to an in-depth life-cycle analysis by Quantis**, packaging made with CleanStream recycled material from Berry's Leamington Spa facility has around 35% lower carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions than virgin plastic - a reduction of about 36,000 tonnes of CO₂ annually.

Unlike conventional mechanically recycled plastic, CleanStream recycled PP has been extensively tested across a range of products and processes to ensure it meets rigorous standards for food-contact safety, including no odor, taint, and low migration. Leamington Spa has received a Letter of No Objection from the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA), confirming CleanStream recycled plastic can be used in levels up to 100% for food-grade applications.*** The company is currently awaiting approval, which it expects to receive in 2024, from the European Food Safety Authority to use CleanStream recycled material in food-grade packaging.

As one of Europe's largest plastic recyclers, Berry's unique, vertically integrated supply chain model enables the company to access packaging feedstocks ahead of the conversion process. Leveraging Berry's global footprint and leading supplier partnerships, it has secured access to around 50,000 tonnes of UK, kerbside-collected plastic waste annually - or more than 1 billion individual packaging items collected each year to be remade into CleanStream recycled plastic****. Providing unique access to both recycling and converting services allows the company to better serve the needs of its customers.
