The Fall 2024 Cycle of the Eugene Washington PCORI Engagement Award Program is now open and includes a special funding opportunity: Building Capacity for Small Organizations To Engage in Patient-Centered Comparative Clinical Effectiveness Research (CER). PCORI is offering this funding opportunity once again following a successful pilot that launched in October 2022.

  • Applications Due (Invitation only): Jan. 13, 2025, 5 pm (ET)
  • Project Start Date: July 1, 2025

This cycle, the Engagement Award Program is also offering its three recurring funding opportunities: Capacity Building, Dissemination Initiative and Stakeholder Convening Support. The online portal is open to Letters of Intent for all four funding opportunities.

The goal of the Engagement Award Program is to help patients, families, caregivers and the broader health and healthcare community build their capacity to plan, conduct, share and use patient-centered CER. The Engagement Award Program supports PCORI's commitment to ensuring that patients and other healthcare stakeholders have a seat at the table throughout the research process. Since 2014, the Engagement Award Program has awarded over $180 million to more than 870 projects to help patients and other healthcare stakeholders have a voice in all stages of research that affect them.

Based on the success of the inaugural 2022 cohort, the Engagement Award Program is again providing this tailored funding opportunity: Building Capacity for Small Organizations to Engage in Patient-Centered CER. This funding opportunity was originally launched based on community input which revealed that many small organizations would benefit from a funding opportunity that included PCORI technical assistance over the life of the project - from application to closeout - and facilitated learning and networking opportunities between other small organization awardees.

Unique aspects of this funding opportunity include technical assistance from PCORI and participation in a learning network with other small organizations in the cohort.

PCORI knows that applicants may be new to patient-centered CER and may also be new to the process of applying for PCORI funding. PCORI will provide opportunities for help. As they apply, applicants will have access to webinars, FAQs, emails and virtual meetings with program staff.

While awardees will be funded to implement patient-centered CER capacity-building projects, PCORI will also support these small organization awardees to strengthen their organizational capacity to become more prepared partners for patient-centered CER. Award recipients will receive one-on-one support, including for the development of a road map that outlines their next steps toward patient-centered CER. In addition, awardees will take part in a learning network and attend in-person meetings with their cohort for collaboration, learning exchange and skills-building sessions.

These awards, like all awards under the Engagement Award Program, are not for research implementation. They are meant to help teams get ready to take part in patient-centered CER. The Engagement Award Program does not fund research studies.

About Patient-Centered CER

Comparative clinical effectiveness research, or CER, is research which compares two or more medical treatments, services or health practices to help patients and other healthcare stakeholders make better-informed decisions. Comparing two or more interventions distinguishes CER from other types of clinical research.

Patient-centered CER compares outcomes that matter most to patients and other healthcare stakeholders. Engaging patients, families, caregivers and the broader health and health care community throughout the research process is at the core of PCORI's patient-centered approach. (In previous funding announcements, the term "PCOR/CER" was used.)
