Salt Lake City announces 2024 community food microgrant awardees

July 18, 2024

Mayor Mendenhall and the Salt Lake City Sustainability Department have announced the groups that have been awarded funding through the 2024 SLC Community Food Microgrant program.

This year, the second the program has been offered, the grant program provided over $40,000 in funding to increase residents' access to fresh, healthy, affordable, and culturally relevant food through community-led projects aligned with the City's 2020-2023 Resident Food Equity Advisors Program recommendations. Projects led by and serving those who identify as members of groups that have been most negatively impacted by the food system were prioritized for funding.

Community groups engaged in projects that address one or more of the grant priority categories (growing food, inclusive outreach, dignified food access, and healthy food environments) were selected for up to $5,000 of funding. The following 10 groups were awarded in 2024:

  • 'Aikona, Fill the Pot Ministries
  • Food Justice Coalition
  • Missio Dei Community
  • New American Goat Club
  • Proyecto Xilonen
  • Salt Lake City Community Fridges
  • Salt Lake City Food Not Bombs
  • Somali Community Self-Management Agency
  • Vanavil Community Garden

Additionally, 62 individual residents or households were awarded $250 each to support their own home food production efforts, such as vegetable and herb gardens, fruit trees, food preservation, backyard chickens, and beekeeping.

"These grants are small but meaningful," said Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall. "This funding supports residents and community groups who have planted a seed-literally and figuratively-and are fostering its growth. I'm grateful for all the work these individuals and organizations do to make Salt Lake City healthier and more resilient by feeding our families and neighbors."

"Building community around food is what this program is intended to do, and we love that we can support that through the grant program," said Sustainability's Food System Resilience Program Manager Maria Schwarz. "We are impressed with the amazing food people have grown through two years of this program and are grateful for their willingness to share it with others."

The Salt Lake City Council funded the Sustainability Department to run the SLC Community Food Microgrant program again in 2025. See more about the grants and organizational projects funded: https://www.slc.gov/sustainability/community-food-microgrant/.
