SCHUMER, GILLIBRAND ANNOUNCE $750,000 GRANT FOR PRESERVATION OF FORT TICONDEROGA

Senators Say Fed Funding Will Help Historic Fort And Museum Continue Attracting Visitors & Teaching Them About North Country's Vivid History

Senators Previously Secured $500,000 To Stabilize & Restore Fort, Emphasize Ongoing Commitment To Preserving Fort That Played Significant Role In American Revolution

Schumer, Gillibrand: Fed $$ Will Ensure Historic Fort Ticonderoga Can Be Preserved For Generations To Come

Following years of advocacy for preserving Fort Ticonderoga, U.S. Senate Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer and U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand today announced they have secured $750,000 for the preservation of Fort Ticonderoga. The funding comes through the National Park Service's Semiquincentennial Grant Program, which commemorates the 250^th anniversary of the United States by delivering funding to preserve historic sites.

"Fort Ticonderoga is a national treasure, and preserving the Fort means preserving the history of the North Country and our nation. Every year, it brings tens of thousands of visitors and millions of dollars in business to Main Streets throughout Essex County and the North Country," said Senator Schumer. "I promised that I would deliver funding to preserve the Fort and this critical part of American history when I visited in the Summer of 2017, and now I'm glad to say a promise made is a promise kept. I'm proud to deliver this significant $750,000 federal funding in honor of our nation's 250^th anniversary so that Fort Ticonderoga has the resources it needs to continue attracting visitors and teaching them about the history of Essex County and the country."

"This $750,000 in federal funding will help with critical reconstruction efforts and preservation of the fort walls, helping ensure that future generations can experience this historic site. I'm proud to deliver this funding and will continue to fight to bring federal dollars home to New York."

Fort Ticonderoga was the site of the first American victory of the Revolutionary War on May 10^th, 1775, when Ethan Allan and the Green Mountain Boys captured the Fort from the British. The Fort now serves as a national tourism destination, museum, and educational site, bringing over 75,000 visitors to the North Country every year. It is estimated that Fort Ticonderoga generates more than $12 million in annual economic impact for the North Country region. Schumer previously secured $500,000 to support a larger campaign for the stabilization and restoration of the Fort's iconic and historic walls, ensuring the site can continue to educate and inspire future generations.

Fort Ticonderoga is owned and operated by The Fort Ticonderoga Association, a non-profit educational organization.
