Minister Grlić Radman officially visits Central Asian countries

From December 9 to 12, 2024, Minister of Foreign and European Affairs Gordan Grlić Radman visited the Republic of Tajikistan, the Republic of Uzbekistan, and the Kyrgyz Republic. During his visit, he met with numerous officials, representatives of executive and legislative authorities, and participated in economic forums. This visit provided an opportunity to discuss strengthening bilateral relations, economic cooperation, and other topics of mutual interest, as well as to address current global political developments.

First Croatian foreign minister to officially visit Tajikistan

On Monday, December 9, in Dushanbe, Grlić Radman met with his Tajik counterpart, Sirojiddin Muhriddin, marking the first official visit of a Croatian foreign minister to Tajikistan in the history of bilateral relations. During the meeting, the ministers emphasized the potential for further strengthening bilateral relations and intensifying economic cooperation. Discussions also included opportunities for collaboration in humanitarian demining and setting priorities for economic cooperation. At the end of the meeting, the ministers signed a Memorandum of Cooperation between their respective foreign ministries.

On the same day, the minister participated in an Economic Forum where Croatian and Tajik business representatives explored possibilities for further cooperation and investments in various economic sectors. The forum provided an additional opportunity to enhance economic ties between Croatia and Tajikistan and paved the way for new investments and mutually beneficial projects.

Grlić Radman also met with the Prime Minister of Tajikistan, Kokhir Rasulzoda, to exchange views on strengthening political and economic cooperation between the two countries. Additionally, during his meeting with Mahmadali Vatanzoda, the First Deputy Chairman of the Representative Assembly of the Supreme Assembly of Tajikistan, discussions focused on enhancing parliamentary cooperation and Croatia's participation in the 150th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), scheduled for April 2025 in Tashkent.

Grlić Radman in Tashkent: Croatia remains committed to building strong partnerships with Uzbekistan

On Tuesday and Wednesday, December 10 and 11, Minister Grlić Radman met with senior officials in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, including the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bakhtiyor Saidov; Prime Minister Abdulla Nigmatovich Aripov; and the Speaker of the Legislative Chamber of the Supreme Assembly, Nuriddin Ismoilov. This marked the first official visit of a Croatian foreign minister to Uzbekistan.

During his meeting with Minister Saidov, Grlić Radman emphasized the potential to improve economic and political relations as well as cooperation in areas of mutual interest. Key priorities identified included information technology, tourism, and diplomacy, along with discussions on trade agreements, taxation, and avoiding double taxation. The ministers also signed a Protocol on Cooperation and Consultations between their ministries.

With Prime Minister Aripov, the discussions focused on enhancing trade exchange, collaboration in tourism and energy sectors, and strengthening political dialogue. Both parties agreed that this visit lays the foundation for a stronger partnership and closer future cooperation. Grlić Radman reiterated Croatia's commitment to building robust ties with Uzbekistan.

On Wednesday, December 11, during his meeting with Nuriddin Ismoilov, First Deputy Speaker of Uzbekistan's lower house of Parliament, the minister explored possibilities for establishing inter-parliamentary friendship groups and fostering more active inter-parliamentary dialogue. They also exchanged information about the upcoming 150th IPU Assembly, to be held in Tashkent in April 2025.

Later that day, Grlić Radman attended an Economic Forum, which provided Croatian and Uzbek companies with an opportunity to exchange ideas and explore cooperation and investment possibilities. Priority areas identified included information technology, pharmaceuticals, tourism, and the food industry.

Grlić Radman's meetings with Kyrgyz officials open new opportunities for cooperation

On Thursday, December 12, Foreign Minister Grlić Radman concluded his multi-day visit to Central Asia with a stop in Bishkek, Kyrgyz Republic. There, he met with his counterpart Jeenbek Kulubayev and the Speaker of the Supreme Council of Kyrgyzstan, Nurlanbek Shakiev, and participated in a Business Forum. This visit also marked the first visit of a Croatian foreign minister to Kyrgyzstan.

In discussions about bilateral political and economic ties, ministers Grlić Radman and Kulubayev highlighted the potential for further development and expressed their intent to strengthen relations through dialogue at all levels. Priority areas for economic cooperation included tourism, education, and culture. To confirm their commitment, the ministers signed a Protocol on Cooperation and Consultations between their ministries.

With Speaker Shakiev, Grlić Radman emphasized the importance of parliamentary collaboration and identified untapped opportunities for cooperation in tourism, culture, education, and healthcare. The interlocutors also highlighted areas such as sports-particularly football-as a universal link fostering mutual understanding between nations.

At the Kyrgyz-Croatian Business Forum in Bishkek, representatives of Croatian and Kyrgyz companies exchanged views on joint projects and investments, particularly in the fields of information technology, pharmaceuticals, and agriculture.
