Steamboat Cinema is New Streaming Service for UW Students

Steamboat Cinema, a curated movie streaming service, is now available to all University of Wyoming students, offering access to hundreds of movies and television programs.

Hosted through Residence Life's section on the UW website, the platform enables students to enjoy a wide selection of films, including blockbusters, indie films and documentaries from their residence halls or common areas.

"This year, Residence Life entered into a contract with Swank Media to provide a curated streaming service to the campus community called Steamboat Cinema," says Ryan Schamp, director of Residence Life and associate dean of students. "Through this partnership, students and faculty connected to UW's internet have access to the full range of content."

The service is designed to enrich student life, serving both recreational and academic purposes. Residence Life selects movies for programming events and floor activities, while students also can request films to be added to the service. Faculty members are encouraged to request films for educational use in classes, making the service a versatile tool across campus.

"Any resident or community member can request a film to be added," Schamp says.

Steamboat Cinema has seen strong engagement from the UW community. In its first year, 174,955 individual views from 10,947 distinct devices logged onto the platform.

"Viewership data from the server shows significant student interest," Schamp adds.

In addition to its entertainment value, Steamboat Cinema also supports campus communication. A brief "bumper' plays before each film, advertising upcoming events, promoting community safety and delivering important health information. Anyone within the campus community can request to add a bumper by contacting Residence Life, Schamp says.

UW's 7220 Entertainment uses Steamboat Cinema to host movie screenings throughout the academic year, offering students a chance to gather and engage in campus life.
