Red Cross Continues to Help as Texans Deal with Aftermath of Hurricane Beryl

In the wake of Hurricane Beryl, hundreds of American Red Cross disaster workers are providing emergency shelter and traveling into hard hit communities in southeast Texas with emergency supplies such as food, water and other critical support.

Almost 60,000 people are still without power and air conditioning as dangerous high temperatures continue to smother the region. On top of this, many face the loss of their homes or the need for extensive repairs.

The actual number of people without power is higher as companies report impacted customers and not how many people actually live in affected homes. This is the second time in a little over two months that people in the area have dealt with flooding and prolonged power outages. In early May, high waters inundated Houston neighborhoods and a derecho left heavy damage in the city. When Beryl hit a little over a week ago, damaged homes were yet to be repaired and debris were still piled up on some sidewalks after the earlier storm.

The heat is particularly dangerous for the elderly and people who rely on electric medical devices as power outages continue. Residents are urged to check on their loved ones and neighbors.

RED CROSS RESPONSE Hear from Red Cross Humanitarian Services President Trevor Riggen on the ground in southeast Texas.

Tuesday night, over 310 people stayed in 12Red Cross and partner shelters seeking relief from the heat and hurricane damage. Red Crossers have provided some 11,000 mealshot meals, over 4,000ready-to-eat meals and 220 cases of water to communities that were heavily impacted by Hurricane Beryl. Mobile teams have also provided 480 clean-up kits to help households kickstart their recovery.

We're prioritizing outreach in communities that are likely to have the most needs or have been identified by our partners or local officials as needing help. Beryl has caused significant damage, and the Red Cross will be with those affected in the weeks and months to come, helping them recover.

BE SAFE. FIND A SHELTER. This extreme heat is dangerous. The Red Cross and partners have shelters open to provide safe refuge from the heat, power outages and damage from Hurricane Beryl.Anyone who needs a safe place to stay or a meal can find shelter information on redcross.org, the free Red Cross Emergency app or by calling 1-800-RED CROSS (800-733-2767).

Red Cross shelters are open to everyone in need, regardless of race, ethnicity, age, religion, gender identity, sexual orientation, ability or citizenship status. All disaster assistance is free. We don't require people to show any kind of identification to enter a shelter - just their name and where they were living before the disaster.

If possible, we encourage people who plan to stay in a shelter to bring prescription medications, extra clothing, pillows, blankets, hygiene supplies, other comfort items and important documents. Don't forget to bring any special items for children, such as diapers, formula and toys, or for family members who have unique needs.

CARIBBEAN RESPONSE Beryl left a trail of destruction across the Caribbean in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Grenada, Barbados and Jamaica.

Local Red Cross societies are currently leading the response efforts in each country. They are focused on the distribution of relief items and short-term shelter solutions to cover people's immediate needs. Hygiene kits, water treatment kits, cleaning kits, kitchen sets, tarpaulins, blankets and mosquito nets have already been dispatched to the hardest hit islands to meet the immediate needs of the affected communities.

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) and its global Red Cross partners are also supporting relief efforts. The American Red Cross has deployed international crisis responders to Trinidad and Tobago and Jamaica to support of those affected by Hurricane Beryl in the Caribbean. These highly trained crisis responders are lending skills such as information management and operations leadership and are supporting on-the-ground relief efforts alongside local Red Cross teams.
