Hoskins named recipient of John L. Bryan Mentoring Award

Dr. Bryan Hoskins, associate professor in the College of Engineering, Architecture and Technology's Division of Engineering Technology, was recently named the 2024 recipient of the John L. Bryan Mentoring Award, presented by the Society of Fire Protection Engineers.

John L. Bryan is a CEAT alumnus who completed a two-year Firemanship Training Program (now the Fire Protection and Safety Engineering Technology program) and earned his bachelor's degree and master's degree from OSU.

John L. Bryan was the first recipient of the award bearing his namesake in 2007, and Bryan Hoskins is the first active OSU faculty member to win the award. The award will be presented at the SFPE Annual Conference and Expo Oct. 6-8, 2024, in Louisville, Kentucky.

Bryan Hoskins said he is extremely honored to win a prestigious award with an impressive list of past recipients in the fire protection industry. It is a special honor to win an award named after John L. Bryan, who left a lasting impact on the industry. The award also raises the profile of the FPSET program.

"It is also a recognition of not just my work, but the work of the Fire Protection and Safety Engineering Technology program in developing future professionals," Bryan Hoskins said.

Ceat Dean Hanchen Huang notes the award is a testament to the program's place nationally in the field of fire protection.

"Bryan Hoskins' commitment and dedication to education, training and advising - as recognized by this award - is very commendable and exemplary of our faculty," Huang said.

The impact Bryan Hoskins makes on his students was a large factor in him being recognized with this award, as well as his involvement in many things within CEAT that help spark interest in the FPSET program.

"At OSU, I have developed and led an annual weeklong summer camp since 2019 for high school students to help them learn about the profession," Bryan Hoskins said. "Also, I have for many years led a design project as part of the Summer Bridge program through CEAT.

"In addition to working with traditional students, I have also been actively engaged in CEAT Professional Development to help educate professionals about technical requirements in fire protection engineering. External to OSU, I have taught two different modules for the SFPE PE Exam Prep course."

Bryan Hoskins has been a member of SFPE since 2001 when he was an undergraduate student. Being recognized by an organization he has been a part of for so long is a special honor.

"Coming from the professional organization for the field means that the impact is being magnified throughout the entire profession," Bryan Hoskins said.

Although Bryan Hoskins never had the privilege to be taught by John L. Bryan, the legacy he left on the industry and CEAT has served as an inspiration to continue to help develop the next generation of fire protection professionals at OSU.

"He has meant a lot to me in my career. His area of expertise, human behavior in fire, is my area of expertise," Bryan Hoskins said. "That connection makes this award even more special to me. Also, having the external recognition of my work with helping prepare the next generation of fire protection engineers validates all of the work that I have accomplished so far and inspires me to continue with the path that I am on."
