As millions brace for Hurricane Milton, CARE and its local partners mobilize to respond

Atlanta, Ga., October 9, 2024 - Less than two weeks after Hurricane Helene cut its deadly and destructive path across the southeastern US, millions in Florida are bracing for the potentially catastrophic impact of Hurricane Milton. CARE is currently mobilizing a response to Milton that will include cash assistance to help vulnerable families most impacted by this storm fueled by climate change. These funds will help address urgent needs like food, water, emergency housing, medication, and other supplies.

"We are deeply concerned for the well-being and safety of those in Milton's path, including many still recovering from Helene," said Amir Farokhi, CARE, Executive Director of U.S. Programs. "CARE is monitoring the storm closely and coordinating with our Florida partners to ensure that those in greatest need have access to our support to help them cope and recover."

While CARE stands up its response to Milton, the organization continues supporting local organizations in multiple states impacted by Helene, which destroyed or damaged thousands of homes, washed out roads, and left millions without power and water. Tragically, at least 230 people lost their lives as a result of Helene.

"We are grateful to have local partners in Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, and Tennessee who are tirelessly committed to helping vulnerable families. With their networks and local knowledge, and CARE's resources and expertise, we are working together to ensure we get cash assistance to those most in need," said Farokhi.

This response to Helene and now Milton is part of the organization's CARE Partner Network, a group of local and national organizations with whom CARE works with following disasters and other emergencies in the U.S.
