More: The "Before the Blue and Beyond the Badge" program was launched in May of 2023 to provide DPD police recruit officers a grassroot training designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of the community they serve, through dialogue with community leaders, public officials, faith-based organizations, and community advocates.

To achieve this, DPD recruit officers hear from, and interact with, members of the Denver community. The two-week program covers topics such as:

  • An overview of Law Enforcement History, provided in partnership with Together Colorado.
  • Presentations by more than 40 different organizations including: The Center on Colfax, members of Denver's Muslim community, Struggle of Love, Jewish Family Services, Montbello 20/20, the Other Side Academy, and the Third Way Center.
  • Localized community history, which is provided by vested community members and RNO's.
  • Honest and engaging conversations with neighborhood residents.
  • Interactive experiential dialogue with community members transitioning from various levels of incarceration, which is provided in partnership with the Denver Dream Center.
  • Community engagement activities and service projects, all tied together with directed learning discussions.

This marks the fifth class of new DPD recruit officers to complete the "Before the Blue and Beyond the Badge" orientation program, bringing the total number of recruits who have participated to more than 200.

About the Denver Dream Center: Our mission is to connect broken people to a community of support by providing free resources and services that address immediate and long-term needs in the areas of homelessness, hunger, poverty, addiction, abuse, education and assisting those transitioning from various levels of incarceration.
