NDAW 2024 KICKS OFF WITH COMMUNITY-BASED...

The National Disaster Awareness Week (NDAW) 2024 has begun with a Community-Based Disaster Management (CBDRM) training for the village of Navuso in Naitasiri.

In opening the CBDRM Training at Navuso Village today, the Turaga na Qaranivalu, Ratu Inoke Takiveikata, acknowledged the Government for their efforts in allocating its resources to educate grassroots communities about the importance of DRR.

The main NDAW celebration will take place in Nakasi on Wednesday due to the Central Division's increasing vulnerability to disasters, such as flooding and landslides.

The National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) is mandated under the National Disaster Risk Management Act (2024) to conduct the National Disaster Awareness Week (NDAW) annually.

The NDAW is celebrated to promote a behavioral change towards disaster risk reduction (DRR) for all members of society. This is done by creating awareness at all levels both in the public and private sector and the community, ensuring that the nation is well informed, with an equally good state of readiness and resilience.

In opening the CBDRM Training at Navuso Village today, the Turaga na Qaranivalu, Ratu Inoke Takiveikata, acknowledged the Government for their efforts in allocating its resources to educate grassroots communities about the importance of DRR.

The theme for this year's NDAW is "Empowering the Future Generation for a Resilient Future". The theme aligns with the global theme of the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction (IDDRR) 2024, emphasising the role of education in protecting and empowering youth for a disaster-free future.

As part of this year's event, the Fiji NDMO, together with its partners, will be conducting a live flood evacuation drill at Navuso Village to specifically test the village's newly installed flood early warning siren and flood response plan. This flood evacuation drill will run parallel to a whole-of-government flood response table-top exercise.

"This training is also essential in building our communities capacity to understand and respond effectively during any disaster," said NDMO's Manager Emergency Planning, and Coordination (EPC) Ms. Litiana Bainimarama.

"I would also like to extend our gratitude to our partners from PCDF and all other valued partners of the NDMO for their continued support of this annual event."
