Professor Ralph D. Christy, Cornell University, discusses initiatives for strengthening SMEs with APO Secretary-General

Professor Ralph D. Christy of the Dyson School of Applied Economics and Management, Cornell University, USA, paid a courtesy visit to Secretary-General Dr. Indra Pradana Singawinata at the APO Secretariat on 18 July. They discussed recent challenges faced by SMEs in Asia and explored potential collaborations for strengthening SME capacity.

During the meeting, Professor Christy shared a major initiative for a Global South-to-South Forum in 2025 to be held in Indonesia. This echoes the historic Bandung Conference of 1955. The initiative aims to foster collaboration and strengthen ties between Asia and Africa, focusing on a range of issues from economic cooperation to cultural exchange. Significant emphasis will be placed on SMEs, which are crucial for economic growth but often face substantial challenges in accessing markets and financing. As preparations continue, organizers are seeking to engage a broad range of stakeholders, including government agencies, multinational corporations, and academic institutions.

Professor Christy expressed gratitude for the longstanding friendship with the APO. Cornell University, renowned for its expertise in agriculture and economic development, has offered valuable insights and support for APO programs, including research collaboration.
