Advanced Nuclear Technologies Request For Information Announced To Gauge Market Interest

Seeks to Identify Entities Pursuing or Interested in Potential Role in Development of Advanced Nuclear Energy in New York

The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) today announced the issuance of a Request for Information (RFI) to gauge market interest in activities to develop advanced nuclear energy technologies in New York State. Through this RFI, NYSERDA seeks to identify entities that are currently pursuing or interested in a potential role in advanced nuclear energy development. Responses will help inform next steps following the Future Energy Economy Summit held in September at Governor Kathy Hochul's direction. Today's announcement demonstrates the State's continued commitment to remain at the forefront of emerging technologies to support the advancement of renewable energy resources and foster continued economic development.

NYSERDA President and CEO Doreen M. Harris said, "As local, national and international companies pursue nuclear energy for their on-site energy needs and the federal government signals interest in investing in this resource, we recognize that now is the time to position New York to fully engage this new sector that can drive significant economic development. Understanding the status of potential opportunities through this RFI will enable us to begin developing strategic partnerships and initiatives for complementary resources that will ultimately support the increased deployment of renewables as we work toward a zero-emission grid of the future."

Entities encouraged to respond include:

• stakeholders who may be considering advanced nuclear solutions, such as users of large electric loads, industrial heat, and hydrogen - both those already active in New York and those considering establishing operations in New York;
• supply chain companies that could provide critical components for development of advanced nuclear energy projects in New York;
• potential host communities for nuclear reactors or supply chain projects
• workforce development and training entities;
• nuclear generation project developers;
• financing/funding entities; and
• research and development entities including laboratories, universities and private entities.

Generation project consideration associated with this RFI is restricted to New York Independent System Operator (NYSISO) Control Area Load Zones A-F which encompasses the area of New York State north and west of the lower Hudson Valley. All other aspects of the request including energy consumers, supply chain, and workforce apply to all parts of New York State.

Separate from today's announcement, later this year, NYSERDA also anticipates releasing a Final Blueprint for Consideration of Advanced Nuclear Technologies which was informed through public comments collected on the Draft Blueprint released at the Future Energy Economy Summit in September. The Summit put forward actions and needs associated with the simultaneous advancement of economic growth and a zero-emission electricity system in New York State, addressing increasing energy demands due to new economic development opportunities, acceleration of renewable energy development, as well as advancement of the technologies that will be necessary to enable a deeply renewable grid.

In addition to the RFI and the Final Blueprint for Consideration of Advanced Nuclear Energy Technologies in progress, other actions underway to inform planning for future energy needs include:

• New York's State Energy Plan update process, which commenced in September 2024 and will address all parts of the New York energy sector; and
• The Public Service Commission Proceeding on Motion of the Commission to Implement a Large-Scale Renewable Program and a Clean Energy Standard ("0x40") NYSDPS-DMM: Matter Master , which focuses on pursuing the target of zero emissions in the electricity sector by 2040, as set out in the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act.

Information gathered through the request announced today is considered advisory in nature and any action by NYSERDA will be subject to all applicable laws, including procedural, regulatory, and environmental review requirements.
