DLA support rep earns award for helping NAVCENT overcome contested logistics challenges

FORT BELVOIR, Va. -

A Defense Logistics Agency customer support representative in Bahrain is part of a group receiving the Adm. Stan Arthur Award for logistics and sustainment support.

Peter Boone earned the Navy's recognition for coordinating logistics support across nearly 1,100 miles in the Arabian Peninsula with the Naval Forces Central Command's Directorate of Logistics and Infrastructure.

"Peter is a critical part of the team, and his experience and expertise are invaluable to our planners," said Navy Capt. Marcus Jones, NAVCENT assistant chief of staff and director of logistics and engineering. "Without his insight and direct connection to DLA, a clear picture of support would not be possible."

The Air Force veteran helped NAVCENT overcome disrupted supply routes and contested logistics challenges for Navy ships in the Red Sea by working with DLA supply chain experts to provide food, fuel and repair parts. Support included the delivery of over 2,500 pallets of supplies to the USS Bataan and USS Dwight D. Eisenhower.

"We had to build a logistics network from scratch in a matter of weeks under challenging conditions," Boone said, adding that teamwork and quick thinking helped make the operation successful.

Anticipating warfighters' needs and educating planners on DLA's capabilities are critical aspects of his support, Boone continued.

"I do everything I can to ensure that an issue that could take three to four weeks takes just three to four hours," he said.

Navy Cmdr. Joseph Murphy, NAVCENT fuels officer, said Boone and NAVCENT logisticians made immediate, real-world impacts.

"The team repeatedly demonstrated their ability to quickly think outside the box to solve a myriad of complex logistics challenges. Receiving the Stan Arthur award reinforces the camaraderie of our group and affirms that we are logisticians of the highest caliber," he added.

Boone has supported NAVCENT and the 5th Fleet for three years. He previously served as deputy director for DLA Distribution Bahrain and deputy commander of a DLA Support Team in Djibouti.

He said he believes everything DLA employees do to support warfighters is significant.

"Every transaction, every reply, every inquiry and every discussion we have directly impacts their well-being," he said. "As long as we continue to stay motivated and inspired by what we do and find an aspect of our job that we can fall in love with, I think we're doing our duty for those who serve our nation."
