Bay Traffic Department first to get state of the art machines in the Eastern Cape

The launch of state-of-the-art Smart Enrolment Units at the Traffic Department in Motherwell is a first in the Eastern Cape and will save customers time and money.

This is the commitment made by the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality at the historic launch of a pilot project, implemented by the Road Traffic Management Corporation in collaboration with the municipality.

Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Cllr Stag Mitchell said the roll out of the new machines is a continuation of efforts by the Traffic Department to eradicate long queues and make it more pleasant for consumers to get helped.

"Residents will now be able to pay with debit cards, capture ID photos and have their eyes tested in one go.

"Over the last five years, the Head of Traffic and Licensing, Warren Prins and his team have worked hard to improve efficiency at our traffic department by introducing the online booking system, regular communication with consumers and getting this very department (Motherwell DTLC) up and running.

"We often receive compliments regarding our services and the many complaints in local newspapers have dried up. It is definitely a good sign that we are moving in the right direction.

"The new SEU machines will further improve our efficiency by drastically reducing the time needed for a transaction to be successfully concluded.

"At this stage a transaction will not take longer then fifteen minutes on the new machines and might even be quicker when our staff get used to the machines.

"It will also completely eradicate the need for identity photos and large amounts of cash to be brought to the traffic department," MMC Mitchell said.

The Korsten and Kariega Traffic Departments are next in line for SEUs.

Neelesh Badasie, from the Road Traffic Management Corporation, said the intention is to completely replace the Live Enrolment Units, currently in use, to improve greater efficiency.

"While the LEU machine was a standalone machine, resulting in customers going from one queue to another, the SEU machines will be able to handle all transactions necessary to produce a driver's license card.

"Clients will save money as they will not need ID photos any longer and spent less time to access services. The Traffic Departments will also save money in printing cost, time and other consumables," Badasie said.
