ICYMI: Allred Meets with AARP Texas to Discuss Lowering Costs for Texas Caregivers and the Credit for Caring Act

Washington, D.C.- Last week, Congressman Colin Allred (TX-32) met with the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) Texas to discuss putting money back in the pockets of Texas caregivers with the Credit for Caring Act. Over 3 million caregivers in Texas provide $2.9 billion in unpaid care per year. Allred is a cosponsor of the Credit For Caring Act, which will help provide caregivers with a tax credit and financial relief. Allred posted a photo of his meeting with AARP Texas on his Twitter here, saying: "I grew up with a single mom who took care of my grandmother, so I know the financial burden that often comes with caring for a family member. I met with AARP Texas to discuss putting money back in the pockets of caregivers, and I will keep working to lower costs for North Texans."

According to an AARP analysis, if caregivers ages 50 and older had support in the workplace, the U.S. gross domestic product could grow by an additional $1.7 trillion (5.5%) by 2030. This legislation is endorsed by AARP Texas.

In addition to cosponsoring the Credit for Caring Act, as a member of the House Bipartisan Paid Family Leave Working Group, Allred has pushed for paid leave to allow more families to care for newborns and relatives with care needs. He also cosponsored the Autism Family Caregivers Actand voted to expand the Child Tax Creditto provide relief to working families.

Specifically, the Credit for Caring Act would:

  • Allow an eligible caregiver to claim a federal tax credit of up to $5,000 for the cost of long-term care expenses that exceed $2,000 in a taxable year.
  • Help offset a portion of the cost of caregiving expenses such as home care aides, adult day care, home modifications, assistive technology, respite care, transportation, or other supports that help caregivers.
