The Next Impact Talk Presents: Innovating Beyond Code

The Office of the Provost is pleased to announce the next installment of its Impact Talks speaker series on Thursday, September 26, 2024, at 2 p.m., in Bethany Hall featuring scholar Giovanni Schiuma. Professor Schiuma hails from LUM University in Italy, where he is a professor of knowledge and innovation management and director of the Department of Engineering, and is the first recipient of the Fulbright Research Lectureship between the U.S. Fulbright Commission and the University.

In his presentation, "Innovating Beyond Code: The Essential Role of Arts as Aesthetic Technologies," Schiuma will explore the critical role of the arts in shaping human-centric organizations within the rapidly evolving digital landscape, with a Q&A to follow.

As businesses increasingly rely on AI and other intelligent technologies, Schiuma argues that true sustainable innovation requires integrating the arts - what he calls "Aesthetic Technologies"- into management systems. This approach represents the essence of Artful Management, combining the creativity, emotional intelligence and cultural awareness provided by the arts with the efficiency of digital tools, leading to more innovative, impactful and human-centered business practices.

In the era of Industry 5.0 - also called the Fifth Industrial Revolution, where human values and experiences are paramount - Schiuma's insights offer a pathway to sustainable growth and the creation of organizations that are both technologically advanced and deeply human.

Professor Schiuma has an extensive academic background, with over 200 publications and experience teaching at institutions such as the University of Cambridge and University of the Arts London. He also serves as president of the International Forum on Knowledge Assets Dynamics (IFKAD) and is the chief editor of Measuring Business Excellence and Knowledge Management Research and Practice. Schiuma's insights will provide valuable perspectives for professionals interested in fostering human-centric growth within the evolving digital landscape.

Since 2021, the Office of the Provost has welcomed speakers from a variety of backgrounds as part of the Impact Talks speaker series, which focuses on understanding the human impact of specific trends, disciplines or industries within communities and societies, welcoming speakers from a variety of backgrounds. Past speakers include PepsiCo's Senior Vice President and Chief Design Officer Mauro Porcini, entrepreneur Riccardo Illy and more recently, Chair of the Artificial Intelligence Council, Professor Jason Gulya.
