Suspect Arrested Following a Shot Spotter Activation

At about 1:20 AM, on Saturday, August 3, 2024, officers assigned to District C-11 (Dorchester) responded to a shot spotter activation in the area of 45 Bullard Street. Officers were notified by Boston Police Operations that there were no 911 calls. Upon arrival, officers located ballistic evidence on scene and no report of ballistic damage or injuries.

Officers assigned to District B-2 were aware of the shot spotter activation and began to canvass the area of Geneva Avenue and Olney Street. Officers observed a motorized scooter traveling towards Columbia Road at a high rate of speed as well as both occupants not wearing helmets.

Officers observed the vehicle fail to stop at a stop sign and were able to broadcast a description of the scooter to responding officers. Officers followed the scooter and observed it fail to stop at a stop sign.

The scooter began to slow down and officers activated their cruiser's emergency lights and sirens to initiate a traffic stop. The operator of the scooter observed officers attempting to stop him, and he immediately accelerated and failed to stop at a red light. Officers lost sight of the scooter and began to search the surrounding streets.

Officers were able to locate the scooter in the area of 296 Bowdoin Street, and attempted to speak with occupants. The operator again tried to flee from officers, and hit a marked cruiser while officers were stopped. The operator attempted to flee on foot but was quickly apprehended by officers.

Officers conducted a pat frisk of the operator, who was later identified as Jayden Fernandez, 19, of Dorchester. Officers recovered a firearm from the suspect's pants which was later determined to be a Remington Arms RP9 with one round in the chamber and seven rounds in a high-capacity magazine capable of holding eighteen rounds. Boston EMS was requested to evaluate any injuries, and the occupant was treated on scene before being released.

Fernandez was placed under arrest and charged with Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, Unlawful Possession of Ammunition, Carrying a Loaded Firearm, Unlawful Possession of a Large Capacity Feeding Device, and Reckless Operation of a Motor Vehicle. He is expected to be arraigned in Dorchester District Court.
