WORKING VISIT OF THE PRIME MINISTER TO BRUNEI DARUSSALAM FOR THE 25TH ANNUAL LEADERS' CONSULTATION 25 - 26 AUGUST 2024

Prime Minister Dato' Seri Anwar Ibrahim will undertake a working visit to Brunei Darussalam on 25 and 26 August 2024 in conjunction with the 25th Malaysia-Brunei Darussalam Annual Leaders' Consultation (ALC).

The Prime Minister will be accompanied by Foreign Minister Dato' Seri Utama Haji Mohamad bin Haji Hasan, Chief Minister of Sabah Datuk Seri Panglima Hj Hajiji bin Haji Noor, Minister of International Trade and Industry Senator Tengku Datuk Seri Utama Zafrul bin Tengku Abdul Aziz, Minister of Higher Education Senator Dato' Seri Diraja Dr. Zambry bin Abd Kadir, Minister of Education Puan Fadhlina binti Sidek, Deputy Premier of Sarawak Datuk Paduka Seri Laila Jasa Haji Awang Tengah Ali Hasan, Deputy Minister of Transport Datuk Haji Hasbi bin Habibollah, Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports Tuan Adam Adli bin Abd Halim, Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department in charge of Religious Affairs Senator Dr. Zulkifli bin Hasan and senior government officials.

The ALC is the highest bilateral mechanism between Malaysia and Brunei Darussalam. During the 25th ALC, the Prime Minister and His Majesty Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Negara Brunei Darussalam Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah Ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar 'Ali Saifuddien Sa'adul Khairi Waddien will review the progress of bilateral cooperation as well as discuss outstanding issues. As close neighbours and partners in ASEAN, the two leaders will also exchange views on regional and international issues of mutual interest. Both leaders are also expected to witness the signing of several bilateral instruments.

This ALC will further strengthen the special ties and multifaceted cooperation between the two countries, underpinned by the Malay Sultanate institution and other commonalities such as culture, language and heritage.

In 2023, Brunei Darussalam was Malaysia's 30th largest trading partner and the 6 th largest among ASEAN Member States with total trade amounting to RM9.31 billion (USD2.04 billion). Total exports to Brunei Darussalam in 2023 was valued at RM6.40 billion (USD1.40 billion), while total imports from Brunei Darussalam was valued at RM2.91 billion (USD0.64 billion). Trade surplus was in Malaysia's favour, at RM3.49 billion (USD0.76 billion). Meanwhile, from January to May 2024, Malaysia recorded a total trade of RM3.53 billion (USD0.75 billion) with Brunei Darussalam.
