Peer Support Staff Engage in Comprehensive Training

Peer tutoring staff of the ARC

On August 19 and 20, The Tutoring Consortium of Seton Hall University hosted a two-day training session for its peer tutors, academic coaches and supplemental instructors. The training was a collaborative effort involving multiple departments, including the Academic Resource Center, the Office of Academic Support for Student-Athletes, the Educational Opportunity Program (EOP), the Resilience, Integrity, Scholarship, and Excellence (RISE) Program, The Math Learning Lab, and the Pre-Medical/Pre-Dental Program.

The first day of training focused on essential skills for peer support staff, including understanding the role of a tutor, active listening skills, time management and familiarizing themselves with the array of campus resources available to students at Seton Hall. The day concluded with participants gaining a deeper appreciation for the critical support they provide in fostering academic success.

Teambuilding activities

The training continued on August 20 with a series of activities designed to enhance team cohesion. The day started with a teambuilding activity which pushed students to think critically and work in groups. With only balloons and tape, the groups were tasked with building the tallest balloon towers they could-the winner came in at 6'11"! The day's agenda continued with a presentation from the Teaching, Learning, and Technology Center (TLTC) on the impact of artificial intelligence on studying. In addition, breakout sessions allowed staff members to explore the unique dynamics of their respective departments, ensuring that each peer support member is well-equipped to address the diverse needs of the student body.

This comprehensive training reinforces Seton Hall's commitment to academic excellence and ensures that peer support staff are well-prepared to contribute to a successful educational environment.
