OFFICIAL OPENING REMARKS BY HON. TOEOLESULUSULU CEDRIC POSE SALESA SCHUSTER MINISTER FOR NATURAL RESOURCES, ENVIRONMENT AND LANDS OFFICIAL LAUNCHING OF STANDALONE ELECTRIC VEHICLE CHARGING STATION

21 JUNE 2024

Susuga ile Faafeagaiga Rev Latu Latai - EFKS Apia

Hon. Ministers of Cabinet

Members of Parliament,

Excellencies

Heads and representatives of Government Ministries

Distinguished Guests,

1. Good afternoon. Thank you for gracing us with your presence here today for the official launching of Samoa's first standalone Electric Vehicle (EV) charging station, marking yet another significant milestone in our transformative transition towards a low carbon economy as envisioned in our Pathway for the Development of Samoa 2022 - 2026.

2. This standalone EV charging station, is equipped with state-of-the-art solar panels to power the charging station. In addition to the EV charging station, I am also pleased to officially announce 15 Home Biogas Systems have been installed as part of a trial run in some homes in Upolu Manono Tai and Savaii including Safotu, Laulii, Sagone, Vaitoomuli, Falealupo Tai, Faleaseela Uta, Salua, Apai, Sala'ilua).

3. The Home Biogas Systems offer households an innovative way to convert organic waste into clean cooking gas and nutrient-rich bio-fertilizer, promoting a self-sustaining lifestyle and reducing dependence on LPG (liquefied petroleum gas). By adopting these systems, households can expect not only economic benefits through reduced energy costs but also contribute significantly to environmental conservation and in the long term foster environmental stewardship and build resilient and sustainable communities.

4. The EV charging station and the home biogas systems are components of the Ministry's commitment towards achieving Samoa's Second Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) which aims to reduce overall GHG emissions by 26 percent in 2030 compared to 2007 levels and subsequently our national target of 70% renewable energy sources by 2031.

5. Other programs in the pipeline to accelerate Samoa's transition to renewable energy and improve energy efficiency include the soon to be launched program of incentive measures to EV cheaper to purchase, establishment of more charging stations, provision of household solar powered electricity generation and energy efficient products. These will go a long way in reducing the dependency on fossil fuels, while more importantly, create new employment and private sector opportunities as well as making energy cheaper for our people.

6. In addition, more initiatives are being implemented and planned to continues to reduce Samoa's carbon emissions, such as the 3 million tree planting program, and the soon to launched 30% by 2030 program for protecting our terrestrial and marine areas.

7. Colleagues, our work does not end here. As we move forward, I urge everyone to embrace this change and to consider the impact of our choices on the environment. The government is committed to exploring and investing in new technologies and solutions that promote green energy and sustainability. Let us all be advocates for sustainability, champions of green energy, and pioneers of a better, cleaner future for Samoa.

8. Lastly, I wish to acknowledge the continuous support and collaboration of our partners, including Global Environment Facility (GEF), United Nation Development Program (UNDP) through the IMPRESS Project, Enviroearth, UNDP ITM (International and Technology Management) and local partners, Vagana Electrical Engineering Solutions & Rasmussen Engineering Ltd. I wish to acknowledge with gratitude support and collaboration of all our stakeholders. This occasion would not have been possible without your support.

Soifua ma ia manuia!

Ata Pueina - Malo o Samoa (Leaosa Faaifo Faaifo)
