Building traditions that bring us together

As a musician, it's probably not surprising that my favorite Ohio State tradition is when our community joins together and sings Carmen Ohio. The shared experience of singing as a group - whether it's after a game or at formal academic events - creates lasting bonds. We recently welcomed the next generation of Buckeyes to campus and at the conclusion of this event, we had the opportunity to collectively sing our alma mater. I found the experience to be a bit different and more meaningful this year. In the days and weeks that followed, I kept returning to the lyrics penned by Fred Cornell over 100 years ago and reflecting on the impact this academic community and this local geographical community has had on me.

Many of us who work in higher education find joy and comfort in the "summer's heat" and the "winter's cold" and how each of those seasons represents new beginnings for us. Each passing season presents new opportunities to instill a love of learning and to provide access to a brighter future through an Ohio State education. So many of the students who attend our campus have dreamt of becoming Buckeyes and we are fortunate to make those dreams a reality. Ohio State Lima affords students access to not only The Ohio State University, but also prepares them to make a transformational impact on their family, friends, and community.

Among my most treasured memories from my time at college are the relationships that I developed there. It was the connections with my peers and the faculty and staff that shaped my future. Even now, all these years later, I look back with great fondness on the individuals who took the time to offer advice or answer questions. It was those interactions that exacted the greatest influence on my professional and personal journey. It's one of the reasons that I am so grateful to work at Ohio State Lima. This place is teeming with caring and compassionate people. I know that the students we teach and the community members with whom we engage get to experience the firm foundation of a friendship with Ohio State, right here in our community. At Ohio State Lima, we are called to support and challenge, encourage and develop all who seek an education with us.

The next time you hear the words of our alma mater (or better yet sing along with your fellow Buckeyes) I truly hope you find a moment or two to reflect fondly on your relationship with Ohio State and our Lima campus. I know that when I take the time to do so, I am filled with optimism as we look to the future. While "the seasons pass and the years may roll", Ohio State Lima remains steadfastly and unwaveringly committed to providing access to an affordable education and to providing meaningful learning experiences to Buckeyes now and in the years to come.
