Updated COVID-19 vaccines and flu shots now available at JCDHE immunization clinics

The updated COVID-19 vaccine and flu shot are now available at the Johnson County Department of Health and Environment's walk-in immunization clinicsin Olathe (11875 S. Sunset Drive) and Mission (6000 Lamar Ave.).

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that everyone six months of age and older get both vaccines before the end of October.

Individuals ages 5 and older can get the updated COVID-19 vaccine if it's been at least 2 months since the last dose of any COVID-19 vaccine. Parents of children ages 6 months through 4 years should consult their healthcare provider about eligibility for the updated vaccine as it's based on the timing and number of previous doses received. Both the flu and COVID-19 vaccines, and the RSV vaccine for older adults, can be given at the same visit.

The nation recently saw a spike in COVID-19 infections, according to datafrom the CDC. The Kansas Department of Health and Environment also saw a spike in Kansas emergency department visits for COVID-19. While those rates are now trending back down, another increase in cases is expected as we approach the winter months.

The summer spike is a reminder that COVID-19 vaccination is still necessary while the virus continues to mutate and spread, says Charlie Hunt, JCDHE director. "Getting the updated COVID-19 vaccine and a flu shot ensures your body is prepared to fight off any infection from these viruses while lessening your chances of getting severely ill if you do get infected," says Hunt.

Both the flu and the COVID-19 vaccine are covered by most private health insurance plans, Medicare Part B, Medicaid and the Vaccines for Childrenprogram. Those without insurance can pay out-of-pocket for the vaccines. No appointment is needed to get vaccinated at JCDHE's clinics. Additional vaccine providers can be found at vaccines.gov.
