2024 Diabetes Care & Education Specialist of the Year award recipient, Christie Schumacher, will travel to ADCES Coordinating Bodies (CBs) in Colorado, Oregon, Montana, New Hampshire, South Carolina and Illinois to facilitate educational sessions for members this fall, as well as to Minneapolis, MN, to present an educational session on medication transitions at the Food and Nutrition Conference and Expo (FNCE).

CHICAGO, IL-2024 Diabetes Care & Education Specialist of the Year award recipient, Christie Schumacher, will be on the go this fall, traveling to ADCES® Coordinating Bodies (CBs) in Colorado, Oregon, Montana, New Hampshire, South Carolina and Illinois to facilitate educational sessions for members. She will also be traveling to Minneapolis, MN, to present an educational session on medication transitions at the Food and Nutrition Conference and Expo (FNCE).

The Diabetes Care & Education Specialist of the Year Award, sponsored by Xeris Pharmaceuticals, Inc., honors a diabetes care and education specialist who has made a special contribution to the field through dedication, innovation and sensitivity in care. Schumacher has made an impact on the specialty throughout her career. She is a professor of pharmacy practice and director of the PGY2 ambulatory care residency program at Midwestern University College of Pharmacy and a Clinical Pharmacist at Advocate Medical Group Southeast Center in Chicago. She currently works in a primary care clinic to provide comprehensive medication management for a variety of internal medicine disease states. After receiving her bachelor's in Biochemistry and Doctor of Pharmacy degrees from the University of Michigan, she completed a PGY1 pharmacy practice residency at Midwestern University College of Pharmacy.

In 2020, Schumacher was awarded the ADCES Diabetes Care and Education Specialist of the Year for Illinois. She is a past Chair of the Board of Pharmacy Specialties® Specialty Council on Ambulatory Care Pharmacy, is a past Chair of the American College of Clinical Pharmacy (ACCP) Endocrine and Metabolism Practice Research Network (PRN) and the ACCP Ambulatory Care PRN.

In addition to all of her career accomplishments and certifications, Schumacher takes pride in providing services to the southside community in Chicago where she works. In 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, many people with diabetes were confined to their homes and unable to pick up their medications due to the state shelter-in-place orders. She led a coordinated effort to reach out to pharmacies in nearby neighborhoods and suburbs to locate the medication people needed and orchestrated the delivery of the medications to those persons' homes.

"It has been an honor to receive the ADCES Diabetes Care and Education Specialist of the Year award", said Schumacher. "This award has allowed me to travel and meet so many amazing diabetes care and education specialists around the country and I am looking forward to traveling and meeting many more this fall!"
