Dec. 17, 2024 - CSUCI Professor of Economics Bryan Tomlin, Ph.D., is the lead researcher on a new study for the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) which explores antisemitism and the challenges that Jewish and Israeli American job applicants experience in the U.S. job market.
After analysis of his large-sample field experiment - which included sending 3,000 inquiries to job postings across the United States - Tomlin learned that Jewish American candidates needed to send in 24% more applications to receive the same number of positive first responses from prospective employers when compared with Americans with Western European backgrounds who applied for the same role. When looking at the results for Israeli Americans, that number rose to 39%.
Tomlin's study highlights the ongoing challenges and biases that exist against Jewish and Israeli Americans. "This study shows that Jewish and Israeli Americans may be missing out on job opportunities just because of their identity, not their qualifications, and it provides a start toward quantifying some of these more subtle but still harmful symptoms of antisemitism," he said.
The hope moving forward, is to inform policies that address workplace discrimination and promote inclusivity.
