GB Swears In Jim Munro as New Police Chief, Celebrates Legacy of Retiring Chief John Peters

On June 24, the City of Grover Beach held a special ceremony in Ramona Garden Park to recognize and celebrate retiring Grover Beach Police Chief John Peters and swear in former Cmdr. Jim Munro as new Police Chief, effective July 1.

With members of the Grover Beach City Council, Police Department and City staff present, attendees shared heartfelt reflections on Chief Peters' decorated tenure at the City and welcomed Chief Munro into his new role with optimism and enthusiasm. Following Chief Munro's swearing-in, incoming Cmdr. Nelida Aceves also took her Oath of Office.

"On behalf of the Council, I want to express our deepest thanks to Chief Peters for his 18 years of exemplary service to the City," said Grover Beach Mayor Karen Bright. "Chief Peters' contributions have been invaluable, and I thank him for all he's done to lead our Police Department. I am also excited to welcome Chief Munro into this new role. As a Council, we are confident that his dedication and
experience make him the ideal fit to lead us into the future."

Chief Peters' career in law enforcement began in 1994, and he joined the Grover Beach Police Department as a Police Officer in 2006. Rising the ranks to Chief in 2015, Peters' leadership has been pivotal to the department's implementation of the Presidential Task Force's 21st Century Policing model, integration of advanced technology and securing of over $3 million in grants, all of which have helped enhance community safety and engagement.

Chief Peters has been at the forefront of implementing significant departmental programs, such as the Body Worn Cameras, Community Cameras, the Cannabis Regulatory Program, SpidrTech Community Surveys and the Coffee with a Cop community engagement initiative, contributing to the department's efficiency and community trust. He leaves behind a legacy of proactive leadership and dedication to public service, shaping a safer and more connected Grover Beach community.

"I want to thank the community of Grover Beach for its steadfast support for our department throughout my tenure. Grover Beach has always stood behind the men and women of our department, and I'm proud of what we all accomplished together. I also want to thank the City Council, both present and past, for prioritizing public safety," said Chief Peters. "I look forward to seeing Chief Munro lead this department into the future. He is the ideal candidate for this role and will be a tremendous leader and champion for public safety in Grover Beach."

Previously a Commander at the Grover Beach Police Department, Chief Munro brings a wealth of experience and leadership to his new role. Previously, he held the rank of Lieutenant at the Clovis Police Department, where he distinguished himself by implementing advanced law enforcement technology and robust community engagement initiatives. His appointment signifies a continuation of dedicated leadership and a commitment to enhancing public safety and community relations in Grover Beach.

"I am honored to serve this community as Police Chief and pledge to lead the dedicated men and women of the Grover Beach Police Department with integrity, dedication and a commitment to excellence," said Chief Munro. "I want to congratulate Chief Peters on a distinguished career and thank him for all his support and leadership over the years."

Following the private ceremony at Ramona Garden Park, the Grover Beach City Council passed a proclamation at its June 24 meeting recognizing Chief Peters and his positive impact on Grover Beach.

"Chief Peters has left an enduring legacy that will continue to guide us into the future," said Grover Beach City Manager Matt Bronson. "Under his leadership, the Grover Beach Police Department has become one of the exemplary public safety agencies on the Central Coast. I look forward to working with Chief Munro to ensure the continued safety and wellbeing of our residents."
