Mayor Dan Johnson has been awarded $1,000 from the Blue Cross of Idaho Foundation for Health as part of the 2024 Mayor's Walking Challenge.
Mayor Johnson, who successfully met the goal of walking 10,000 steps each day in October, is now considering potential community health projects in Lewiston where these funds can be used to promote wellness and physical activity.
Mayor Johnson joins over 100 Idaho mayors who took part in this record-setting year for the challenge, with a total of $93,500 awarded to Idaho communities. By participating in this initiative, mayors across the state help raise awareness about the importance of physical activity and set an example for their communities. In Lewiston, Mayor Johnson's earned funds will contribute to a community-based project designed to foster a healthy, active lifestyle.
"This walking challenge has been a rewarding experience, both personally and for the opportunity it provides our community," Mayor Johnson said. "I'm looking forward to identifying a project that will encourage wellness and support the health of our residents here in Lewiston."
The Mayor's Walking Challenge, an annual program by the Blue Cross of Idaho Foundation for Health, encourages mayors to lead by example in prioritizing physical activity. Since its inception in 2014, the challenge has contributed over $699,000 to Idaho cities for health-focused initiatives. The 2024 challenge drew participation from mayors in all 44 Idaho counties, making it the most successful year to date.
