Police Searching For Inmate Who Walked Away From Southern California Jail Facility

Officials with the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, as well as local law enforcement, are searching for a 22-year-old inmate who walked away from a community reentry program facility in Los Angeles Tuesday. Authorities said an emergency prisoner count called at around 2:20 p.m. Tuesday confirmed that Samaki M. Tywman was missing after officials were alerted that he had tampered with his ankle monitor. The 22-year-old is described as 5 feet 7 inches tall and weighing approximately 179 pounds. He was last seen wearing a white t-shirt, black sweatpants and black tennis shoes, a CDCR news release detailed. The release also stated that Tywman was serving a five-year sentence for "discharging a firearm in an inhabited dwelling/vehicle/aircraft and second-degree robbery." In early August, he entered CDCR's Male Community Reentry Program, which allows eligible offenders to serve the end of their sentences at the center where they are provided with programs to help them transition back into the community. "Since 1977, 99 percent of the incarcerated people who have escaped or walked away from an adult male institution camp, in-state contract bed or Community Rehabilitative Program Placement have been apprehended," officials added.

Alleged BevMo Robber Found Guilty

Sentencing is expected Thursday for one of two Los Angeles men found guilty of a federal charge for committing a string of robberies in a 10-day span that ended in the duo leading law enforcement in a freeway chase before crashing a stolen car into a tree then running across six lanes of highway traffic during rush hour. Anthony Flores, 28, was convicted in July after a three-day trial in downtown Los Angeles of interference with commerce by robbery - known as a federal Hobbs Act crime, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office. According to court documents, beginning in May 2023, Flores and co-defendant Ivin Kitu Sanford robbed two BevMo stores in Long Beach and Lakewood, stealing high-end liquor stored behind security glass and, in some instances, threatening employees with violence. The men would then sell the liquor on Instagram, evidence showed. At the Long Beach store, Flores stole around $2,604 worth of liquor and at the Lakewood store, he escaped with around $800 worth of liquor, according to federal prosecutors. Flores also conspired to rob two additional BevMo stores located in Pasadena and West Covina, prosecutors said.

San Diego Man Sentenced To Two Years For Sexually Abusing Teenager Aboard Flight

San Diego resident Ryan Coffey was on a cross-country flight in January 2023 when he offered alcohol to a 14-year-old sitting next to him, according to court records. He didn't know the girl, who was 17 years his junior, according to the U.S. Department of Justice. That didn't prevent Coffey, however, from sexually molesting her on the five-hour-plus American Airlines evening flight from Charlotte, N.C., to San Diego. Now a federal judge has sentenced Coffey to prison for his actions. The now 33-year-old was sentenced Monday to two years in prison and 10 years of supervised release afterward and saddled with just under $11,000 in fines and restitution. Coffey had pleaded guilty to sexual abuse of a minor and abusive sexual contact in August. A call to his attorney was not immediately answered. Coffey admitted in court that he supplied the girl with rum and touched her inner thigh and breasts, according to the Department of Justice. A fellow passenger said that she heard the minor tell Coffey that she was afraid of flying, according to a sentencing memo. That's when he took out a bottle of alcohol from his bag and gave it to her to relax, according to the witness statement in the memo. "Then he patted her on the leg and gave her his hand to hold," the memo noted. "He even held her by the waist while watching a movie during the flight." Ultimately, the victim claimed that Coffey also allegedly forced his fingers inside her vagina and forced her to perform oral sex.

Colorado Officer Killed, Second Seriously Injured In Crash With Suspected DUI Driver

A Golden Police Department officer was killed and a second seriously injured after they were hit by a suspected drunken driver while responding to a crash on Colorado 58 on Wednesday night. The two officers, a man and a woman, were investigating a crash near Washington Avenue and were outside of their vehicle when they were struck just before 5 p.m., Golden Police Chief Joe Harvey said late Wednesday night. The section of highway is a curved overpass, and another officer was staged nearby, Colorado State Patrol officials said in a news release. Both officers were forced under the vehicle from the previous crash and were trapped, CSP officials said. One officer, a 33-year-old man, died at the scene. The second officer, a woman, was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. The driver was arrested on scene for "suspected impairment," state patrol officials said late Wednesday. The agency did not release the driver's name. Harvey declined to release the officer's name Wednesday night, citing the wishes of his family, but held back tears as he described the man as an "amazing human being" who served in the military and flew Black Hawk helicopters.

Video: Man Fires Shotgun At Georgia Deputies In Jail Parking Lot Before OIS

The Gwinnett County Sheriff's Office has released a heavily edited but detailed video that provides context around an Oct. 7 incident in which deputies exchanged shots with a gunman in their own parking lot. Emmanuel Patrick Bearden, 44, of Peachtree Corners, was taken to the hospital after he was shot by deputies early last month, the GBI said. The incident was captured on video from a variety of angles thanks to security cameras at the sheriff's office and body-worn cameras used by deputies. The video shared by the sheriff's office Monday pieces together video clips from multiple different sources to show how the shooting happened. "The released video has been edited to include markers that highlight key moments of the incident, with blurring applied to protect the integrity of this ongoing investigation," the sheriff's office said in a statement. NOTE: The video contains graphic content. It was edited and released by the Gwinnett County Sheriff's Office and was not produced by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. The video begins with Bearden's arrival at the jail, where the sheriff's office said his behavior appeared strange. He can be seen wearing body armor as he speaks to deputies just inside the facility's door. He is accompanied by his young daughter, who is wearing a T-shirt and a diaper.
