Command Career Center moves to Olympic Lodge

The Puget Sound Naval Shipyard & Intermediate Maintenance Facility Command Career Center has transitioned from their old office in the Controlled Industrial Area to their new location at the Olympic Lodge Training Center.

While the three-person team may have moved to a new building, they are still providing the same services and counseling to help PSNS & IMF employees reach their career goals and expand their opportunities.

"This move allows us to build a larger collaboration and provide more opportunities for our workforce with Command University," said Heidi Anderson, Command Career Center counselor lead.

While the Career Center's physical location is no longer inside the CIA, PSNS & IMF employees can still schedule appointments during work hours through their supervisors. In addition, shipyard workers on both swing and graveyard shifts can also schedule appointments with advance notice.

"Employees can come to our office or we can go to them," explained Anderson. "We meet people where they are and help turn their ideas into initiatives."

The Command Career Center team takes an enormous amount of pride in their flexibility and ability to provide their help to anyone in the shipyard; regardless of where they are located.

For employees without Internet access, Anderson and her team can provide tablets during these sessions to help give them the same chances at career progression as their fellow coworkers.

The Career Center's availability extend to everyone that works at PSNS & IMF from workers on the deckplates and in production shops to those that work in offices.

"The career center is for everyone," said Rozy Castellanos, career counselor. "We are here to assist our leaders as well as their workers."

While the Career Center helps with résumés, interview preparation and helping shipyard workers identify career path opportunities, it also offers courses in leadership development and mentoring.

Anderson encourages leaders to use the Career Center to help make their teams run more efficiently and learn techniques that can help them become more marketable on their résumés as they seek to advance their careers.

While many workers take advantage of the opportunity to use the Career Center, some may feel uncomfortable asking their supervisor for help making an appointment. For those employees, it is easy to confidentially make an appointment on the team's Sharepoint site to meet privately.
