GCI Continues Progress on Aleutians Fiber Project Featured in “Every Last Mile”

GCI has kicked off the latest phase of its Aleutians Fiber Project in the Kodiak Island community of Port Lions. The undertaking is part of the ISP's larger efforts to connect the remote Aleutian Islands to multi-gigabit speeds via 800 miles of subsea fiber-optic cable.

"We're excited to start work in our second phase of the Aleutians Fiber Project community," said GCI Principal Program Manager Rebecca Markley. "Our crews are working hard to complete the construction phase as efficiently as possible for the launch of 2.5 gig residential internet speeds in the coming months. Once complete, we'll be one step closer to closing the digital divide in Alaska."

Small communities, big impact

Port Lions will be the seventh community connected via the project after Chignik Bay, Larsen Bay, Unalaska, Sand Point, King Cove, and Akutan.

• Construction crews also started work earlier this month in Ouzinkie, where they're building out the local fiber infrastructure.
• The King Cove project was featured in NCTA's docufilm "Every Last Mile," which follows crews across the country as they work to connect far-out communities to next-generation broadband.
  • In King Cove, crews raced against the clock to connect the local school and health clinic to gigabit internet, taking care not to disturb any potential indigenous archeological sites in the process.
