Roads update for week starting 16 December 2024

A summing up of road delays and closures due to road works underway or soon to start in the county - for the week starting Monday 16 December 2024.

Road works closures and delays:

A966, Skiddy Road to Gorseness Road, Rendal

Road reconstruction works commenced on Monday 30 September and are currently expected to be completed during week commencing Monday 16 December 2024. Work will be carried out under traffic lights and temporary 30mph speed limits.

Junction Road, Kirkwall

Junction Road will be closed outside the Albert Hotel (between its junctions with the Albert Street car park and Burnmouth Road), as needed from Monday 16 September 2024, for approximately six months as building works are carried out on the Albert Hotel. A signed diversion for motorists and buses will be in place via Ayre Road, Borough Road (past the Police Station) and Great Western Road. Drivers are advised to keep to the diversions as much as possible and avoid using West Castle Street due to bus traffic. Folks wishing to use the Albert Street car park will need to approach via the Kiln Corner roundabout.

A965 New Finstown Sub-Station, Firth

Temporary traffic signals are in place as works are carried out to construct the access to the new Finstown sub-station site. Unfortunately, the traffic management will have an effect on all traffic in the area during the course of the works with delays expected for all traffic and bus services passing through the site.

Looking ahead:

Junction Road and Pickaquoy Road, Kirkwall

here will be temporary three way traffic signals at the Junction Road, Pickaquoy Road roundabout from Monday 6 January 2025, to enable new drainage connections to the Salvation Army Hall. Works to install a new electricity supply will then follow on which may also require temporary traffic signals, with both elements of the works expected to take around two weeks to complete.

Looking further ahead:

Pier Road, St Margaret's Hope - Localised reconstruction works are due to start during week commencing Monday 20 January 2025 and take around three weeks to complete.

King Street, Kirkwall - Reconstruction works are planned to start early to mid-February 2025, with the works being carried out under road closure conditions.
