Students put Language Skills to the Test at the 3rd National Chinese Riddle Competition

More than 180 students from 26 secondary schools participated in the third National Chinese Riddle Competition (全国中学生灯谜比赛) on Saturday, 4 May 2024 at Dunman High School (DHS). Jointly organised by the Committee to Promote Chinese Language Learning (CPCLL), Tung Ann District Guild, Riddle Association (Singapore) and DHS, the competition aims to instil a love for Chinese language and culture in students through traditional Lantern Riddles.

2.Minister of State for Education and Chairperson of the CPCLL Ms Gan Siow Huang delivered a speech and presented awards to the winners. At the competition, student participants took part in a pen-and-paper quiz, before the top ten teams in the Chinese and Higher Chinese categories advanced to the Finals to compete in a live quiz. The words to be guessed were aligned with what students learnt in the Chinese Language curriculum. Please refer to the Annex for the list of participating schools.

3.In the lead up to the competition, more than 180 students from 22 schools took part in a Chinese Riddle Workshop to learn riddle-solving techniques and gain a deeper understanding and appreciation for traditional Lantern Riddles.
