Kildee Announces New Federal Funding to Fund Local Substance Use, Mental Health Treatment Programs

FLINT-Congressman Dan Kildee (MI-08) today announced new federal funding for Genesee County programs to connect people with the support they need to overcome substance use disorders and mental health challenges.

The $400,000 grant, awarded through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, will strengthen Genesee County's Veterans Treatment Court and Adult Felony Recovery Court programs. These programs provide an evidence-based alternative to incarceration and put people on a path to recovery, improve public safety and save taxpayer dollars.

"Too many families struggle to get the care they need to address substance use disorders and mental health challenges," said Congressman Kildee. "Specialty courts like the Veterans Treatment Court and the Adult Felony Recovery Court provide individuals with a second chance and the opportunity to address these issues head on. I'm proud to bring federal resources back to mid-Michigan to improve public safety and strengthen our community."

"We're very excited to receive this grant award for another 5-year term. The Recovery Court and Veteran's Treatment Court programs play an integral role in preventing recidivism in our communities in Genesee County by offering appropriate, grant-funded treatment programming and resources for substance use and mental health disorders," said Breana Benham, Specialty Court Services Director for the Genesee County 7th Circuit Court.

Congressman Kildee has championed efforts to prevent substance use, improve public safety, and reduce recidivism in mid-Michigan. In 2023, Kildee announced$3 million for Mott Community College's Flint/Genesee Pathway Home Program, which helps formerly incarcerated individuals find jobs and transition back to the community. Also last year, Kildee securedfederal funding to support youth substance use prevention efforts in Genesee County.
