66 ChatGPT Prompts for UX Design to Try in 2024

66 ChatGPT Prompts for UX Design to Try in 2024

Published: September 02, 2024

I think even birds on the wire already know that ChatGPT has made a big impact in many fields.

And UX design is no exception. It's amazing for getting user insights and helps a lot with research and testing.

Honestly, I was skeptical of ChatGPT for such purposes, thinking it didn't live up to the hype. Then I realized the problem isn't the tool - it's how one uses it.

So, if you're a UX designer running into the same issues, it's time to learn how to write good prompts and get the best out of ChatGPT.

Save these 66 examples cause they'll save you. And your time.

How Chat GPT Can Help with UX Design

ChatGPT can be a helping hand in different stages of the UX design process. Here are some specific use cases:

1. Ideation and Brainstorming

When creating a new mobile app, ChatGPT can suggest cool features like voice controls, personalized recommendations, or game-like elements.

For a website redesign, it can help by proposing different layouts, color schemes, types of images, and fonts, so you can easily compare your options.

"Our visuals should not be beholden to stock imagery and Photoshop modifications. Our visuals should be a direct reflection of the people, places, and experiences we are designing for," says Greg Apper, Chief Exploration Officer at Superunknown Studios.

Apper says that combining ChatGPT with Midjourney grants his team this superpower.

"We can construct ChatGPTs to translate persona demographics, goals, lifestyle, aesthetic preferences, and Day in the Life short stories into precise, bespoke Midjourney prompts," Apper says.

2. User Research and Testing

ChatGPT can help create detailed user personas by generating realistic profiles and scenarios from user data and research. That's one of the reasons why I like it so much.

It can also assist in drafting great survey questions to gather useful feedback from users. And, of course, it can analyze and summarize user feedback from surveys, interviews, or usability tests, making everything quick and easy.

3. Prototyping and Wireframing

ChatGPT can generate placeholder content for prototypes, giving designers a glimpse of the final product. It can simulate user interactions and create responsive prototypes.

I especially love it for simulated feedback, which helps spot issues and areas for improvement.

4. Accessibility and Inclusivity

ChatGPT can identify potential accessibility barriers in designs that we often overlook or don't notice.

It can suggest ways to improve accessibility and make designs more usable for people with disabilities.

And if you're having trouble creating content that's clear and easy to understand for everyone, including those with cognitive or language impairments, ChatGPT can help again.

How to Use UX Design ChatGPT Prompts to Gain Precise Results (+ Examples)

Be clear and specific.

When you're crafting prompts, be clear and specific. The more detail you provide, the better ChatGPT can understand and respond to your needs. Vague but also broad questions might lead to generic answers that don't fully address your situation.

Make sure to provide important details in a logical order, but avoid writing long paragraphs.

Prompt Examples

  • "What are the key pain points for users when using [specific product], particularly in the areas of [e.g., onboarding, feature usage, checkout process]?"

How ChatGPT helps: It analyzes user feedback and industry insights to identify common issues with Google Fit's onboarding, feature usage, and workout tracking. I got detailed insights into user frustrations and can better understand what to do (and avoid) in case I decide to create something similar.

  • "Can you identify the most common challenges or frustrations users face when interacting with [specific product] based on recent user feedback or usability studies?"

How ChatGPT helps: It reviews and collects data from user feedback and usability studies to pinpoint frequent issues users encounter with MyFitnessPal.

Note: Although there's a high chance that this information is collected from many reliable sites on the internet, be sure to double-check any suspicious details, such as accuracy and reliability.

For instance, after double-checking, I didn't find any issues with the accuracy of nutritional data and calculations (I use it myself). It's a good idea to ask for sources.

It's somewhat vague there; it gave fairly generic examples, so it's hard to verify completely. But I don't plan to waste more time on it.

What I needed, I got. I learned what might potentially bother people in such apps, so I need to avoid making those mistakes (whether they actually exist on MyFitnessPal or not).

Include context.

Including context in your prompts helps to frame the response in a way that fits your particular situation.

Context provides ChatGPT with background information that can guide the advice and suggestions you receive.

Prompts examples:

  • "What changes should we implement in [specific feature or part of the app], considering user feedback indicates that it's currently slow and not intuitive for our [specific user group]? Mention [insert numbers] most important improvements."

How ChatGPT helps: It analyzes user feedback to identify specific issues with the search functionality. Then, it provides actionable recommendations to improve the speed and intuitiveness based on user needs and best practices.

  • "How can we improve [specific element] on our [website or app], considering that we aim to make our platform more accessible for users with visual impairments?"

How ChatGPT helps: It provides a clear structure, relevant information, and actionable steps to improve color contrast accessibility. It also recommends tools and emphasizes the importance of user testing.

I recommend watching Gary Simon's YouTube tutorial on using AI for UX design, so you can better understand how much context ChatGPT needs.

The video covers creating user personas, identifying target audiences, and mapping user flows.

The best part? Gary uses a real project-designing a landing page for a lactation consulting business (his wife's website)-to show how these AI tools can make your design process more efficient.

  • "What features would be most beneficial for [target user group] when using [product]?"

How ChatGPT helps: It generates a comprehensive list of features tailored to the specific needs of users aged 55-70. The focus is on accessibility, usability, and integration with other apps and devices which is super important for the people of this age.

Don't hold back on creativity.

Spark a bit of creativity with your prompts if you want ChatGPT to treat you with some innovative solutions and fresh ideas.

With creative prompts, you invite outside-the-box thinking and will probably get super cool responses to set your design apart.

Balance open-ended and specific questions.

Use a mix of open-ended and specific questions, so ChatGPT can get a well-rounded view of the issue.

Open-ended questions encourage broad exploration and idea generation, while specific questions focus on specific design details.

Prompt Examples

  • "What are [insert number] best practices for improving the user experience of [type of product]?"

How ChatGPT helps: It concisely outlines five key areas for improvement and further elaborates on each with specific, actionable tips.

  • "What specific changes can we make to the navigation of [app or site] to improve usability?"

How ChatGPT helps: It offers tips to make ecommerce site navigation better - simplifying the main menu, enhancing search, and adding sticky navigation.

Ask for examples.

Asking for examples or case studies shows you how things work in real life.

They provide clear evidence of what works and what doesn't, making it easier to make informed design decisions.

Prompt Examples

  • "Can you explain how effective onboarding processes look in apps like [specific app]?"

How ChatGPT helps: It highlights key elements of engagement, personalization, and ease of use in each app. This breakdown shows how successful apps implement effective onboarding strategies to create a positive user experience from the start.

  • "What are some successful case studies of improving user experience in [industry]?"

How ChatGPT helps: It provides examples of successful case studies for improving user experience in the ecommerce industry. It is nicely structured, starting with the challenge, solution, and result, so I can better understand it.

Note: It's always a good idea to double-check the accuracy of the provided case studies, as ChatGPT sometimes invents such things.

Integrate feedback.

Incorporating feedback in your prompts helps you refine and improve future questions.

By taking into account past responses and user feedback, you can adjust your approach to better meet changing needs and goals.

Prompt Examples

  • "Based on user feedback, how can we refine the design of [specific feature]?"

How ChatGPT helps: It offers seven strategies to refine the notification system, each addressing different aspects of the problem.

  • "Based on the latest user reviews, which highlight issues with [insert problems], what changes should we make?"

How ChatGPT helps: It outlines a detailed approach to identify and resolve the root causes of crashes, offers several strategies to improve the app's navigation, and recommends features that allow users to set their preferences.

Use hypotheticals.

Hypothetical scenarios help you see how design choices might work out before you make a decision.

When thinking about how changes could affect users, you can spot potential challenges even before they happen. And of course, spot some good opportunities as well.

Prompt Examples

  • "How might [insert change] affect [insert aspect]? Consider scenarios where [insert variation 1] versus [insert variation 2]."

How ChatGPT helps: It organizes the information into a clear, easy-to-follow structure with headings and subheadings. It's super easy to digest the different scenarios and their corresponding effects.

  • "What could be the potential impact on [insert outcome] if we [insert change]? Explore scenarios where this feature is [insert variation 1] versus [insert variation 2]."

How ChatGPT helps: It offers specific considerations for implementing a new feature. And, what I like the most - it presents a balanced view, acknowledging the potential benefits/drawbacks of each.
