Firefighters battling brush fire mauka of Piilani Highway in Kihei

RESIDENT ADVISORY

Residents in the area makai of Piilani Highway between Ohukai and Waipuilani roads are advised to remain vigilant, according to a Maui Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) announcement. Community members with respiratory concerns are advised to stay indoors with windows closed, or leave the area. Avoid the area if possible. Monitor radio, TV and mobile devices for official information.

FIRE UPDATE

The County of Maui Department of Fire and Public Safety (MFD) reported a brush fire at 4 p.m. Wednesday, July 31, on vacant land south of Ohukai Road in the area mauka of Piilani Highway. No injuries or structural damages have been reported due to the fire, which was initially estimated at 5 acres.

RESPONSE

Three engines, one wildland engine, two tankers, Air One helicopter and two private dozers.

EVACUATIONS ISSUED

The state Department of Education evacuated Kulanihakoi High School as a precaution.

BACKGROUND

MFD reported the Kihei Fire at 4 p.m. July 31. MEMA's Emergency Operations Center was partially activated at 4:22 p.m. July 31 in response to the fire.
