EU Statement

The EU thanks the Head of the IIMM for the reporting and updates, and reiterates its strong support to this mandate.

Mr Koumjian,

As reported, since the 2021military coup, the number of serious international crimes committed in Myanmar has continued to increase in frequency and scale.

The EU is alarmed at the reported escalation of brutal war crimes and crimes against humanity committed mainly by the Myanmar security forces or affiliated militias. These include physical mutilations of persons detained, systematic torture of people of all ages, including children, sexual and gender based violence, sexual violence as a weapon of war, indiscriminate use of military force in residential areas. Rohingya and members of other minority groups continue to bear the brunt.

The work of the IIMM and the stakeholders it works with has enabled some of the most impressive examples of international accountability efforts.

It has been six years since we joined forces with the OIC in this council to create the IIMM. The Mechanism has been sharing information with both the ICC and the ICJ in the case that the Gambia filed in 2019. The Mechanism also shares information with the ongoing universal jurisdiction trial in Argentina.
