Teachers encouraged to attend CU Become a Reading Specialist to learn about additional certification

Certified teachers who are interested in earning additional qualification to become a reading specialist are encouraged to attend "CU Become a Reading Specialist," a virtual workshop slated for Thursday, April 7, at 5:30 p.m. on Zoom. This free, specialized information session, presented by the Cameron University Department of Education, will cover the admission standards and curriculum for earning a Masters of Education degree in Reading.

"Cameron's M.Ed. in Reading is a great opportunity for teachers who want to improve their practice or become specialized in the teaching of reading," says Jennifer Dennis, dean of the CU School of Graduate and Professional Studies. "The degree is also beneficial in instructing teachers on how to coach and mentor others in the field. With the large turnover rate in the teaching profession, mentor teachers who can model and train more inexperienced teachers are of great value in schools."

By pursuing a master's degree in reading, students will experience the preparation necessary to serve as reading specialists in Oklahoma public schools. The program provides pedagogy in the teaching of reading and specialized knowledge for working with children who find reading difficult. It will also prepare reading specialists to review and develop reading curricula for the schools in which they teach.
