When a Room is More Than a Room

A place at the Mount that is special to me is my dorm room. It is the place where I met my best friend. It has become a place where I found quiet to focus on my academics. It has become a place where I have learned to respect others further.

At first glance I found it boring to be in all the time. I was lost with what to do with all my extra time. Should I bed rot and watch TikTok and Netflix? Rather than be a couch potato, I decided to go out of my way to learn about my roommate and who he is. My roommate and I both thought we wouldn't click in any way shape or form, but it was surprising to see how much we have in common.

My room has become a place for fun nights playing video games late into the night. My room has become a place not just for sleeping but for conversation. I became closer than I thought I would be to my roommate.

The task of having to care for my room began as feeling like a chore but has gotten progressively more peaceful to do.

It is a place where I found respect for my roommate and what he dislikes and has bettered my ability to read people. I found that having my own space to care for is not just a task to dread but a time for serenity where all thoughts can just disappear, and my mind can be confined to a set place.

Decorating my room was the hardest part. How do I express myself? I brought essentials to the Mount and have begun expanding my horizons by putting decorations for seasons and holidays.

It has become a place to appreciate. I appreciate the fact that I have a roommate who picks up after himself and understands quiet time and time for conversation.

It was never just a room that I would have to stay in but rather a place where I could learn more about myself and others.
