NYU Law Professor Yoshino on “Trans Rights Unlimited” —November 13

New York University School of Law Professor Kenji Yoshino will deliver "Trans Rights Unlimited"-the 2024 Irving R. Jurow Lecture-on Wednesday, November 13 at 5:30 p.m. (Hemmerdinger Hall, Silver Center for Arts and Science, 31 Washington Place [at Washington Square East]).

In his lecture, Yoshino, the Chief Justice Earl Warren Professor of Constitutional Law at NYU School of Law and the director of the Meltzer Center for Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging, will consider why some countries are seemingly pro-transgender rights, but also anti-LGBTQ rights. Iran, for instance, offers state-subsidized gender-confirmation surgery, but punishes same-sex sexual intimacy with the death penalty. However, in the United States, a "pro-trans, anti-gay" position is not prominent. The lecture will unpack this terrain, consider relevant Supreme Court decisions, and offer an outlook for both categories of rights.

Yoshino, who specializes in constitutional law, antidiscrimination law, and law and literature, has published in major academic journals, including the Harvard Law Review, the Stanford Law Review, and the Yale Law Journal. He has also written for the Los Angeles Times, the New York Times, and the Washington Post. Yoshino is the author of three books and the co-author, with David Glasgow, of Say the Right Thing: How to Talk About Identity, Diversity, and Justice (Simon and Schuster, 2023).

The lecture is free and open to the public. An RSVP is required at the event page. For more information, email [email protected] or call 212.998.8100.

Endowed by the late Irving H. Jurow, NYU's College of Arts and Science's premier annual lecture is designed to bring leading public intellectuals and cultural figures to campus. The lecture demonstrates to its faculty, students, and alumni the centrality of liberal arts education to the university's academic community. Past Jurow lecturers include Harvard University's Robert Waldinger; Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Laurie Garrett; James Esseks, director of the ACLU Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender and HIV Project; General John Allen; Professor Lani Guinier; Donald Marron, Jr.; Wanda M. Austin; Alfred Brendel; and Hélène Cixous-among other notable leaders in their respective fields.
