Natural Sciences Department to Host 2024 Biomedical Research Symposium
Howard Hughes Medical Institute Vice President to Serve as Keynote Speaker

(BOWIE, Md.) - Bowie State's Department of Natural Sciences will be hosting the upcoming 2024 Biomedical Research Initiative Summer Symposium at the Center for Natural Sciences, Nursing and Mathematics on July 26, 2024. This will be the second time the conference has been held on Bowie State's campus.
"This symposium is important because engaging in biomedical research at HBCUs provides students with valuable hands-on experience while promoting diversity in the scientific workforce and advancing health equity," said Dr. Jacqueline Smith, Bowie State associate professor and chemistry coordinator.
The conference, which expects to seat around 40 guests, is a prime stage for highlighting the scientific achievements of students whose research is focused on solving modern medical problems, such as cancer and other difficult to treat chronic conditions. The symposium's keynote address will be delivered by Dr. Blanton Tolbert, the vice president of science leadership and culture at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. As a scientist, Dr. Tolbert is a leading chemist with expertise in nuclear magnetic resonance, biophysics, protein purification, protein expression, and molecular biology.
Dr. Smith hopes that highlighting student research during the symposium illuminates the need for diversity in the sciences and the importance of exposing students to rich and impactful research opportunities that would propel them forward as young scientists.
